TTE Group Tactical Carbine I - Oct 27/28, 2012 - Denver CO

Class Description: TTE Group's "Tactical Carbine I" class is designed to introduce shooters to a set of 10 tactical shooting standards based on materials from MSG Paul Howe (RET), the owner of Combat Shooting and Tactics. Using a set of diagnostic drills, shooting standards and tactical application modules, you'll leave the course with a set of quantifiable, qualitative skills to provide you with a baseline of performance to improve your shooting and diagnose accuracy and speed issues. Some of the standards and modules will help you learn skills such as proper rifle employment, transitions, recoil management, multiple target engagement, precision shooting, shooting on the move, and other items.

Prerequisites: This class is best attended by shooters who already have attained a basic skill set with their rifle and are ready to move to the next level. Both beginning and advanced students will find materials to improve the abilities and to help diagnose shooting issues.

Equipment Needed:

- Rifle with 3 magazines (5 or more suggested, and backup weapon is never a bad idea)
- Pistol with 3 magazines (5 or more suggested, and backup weapon is never a bad idea)
- Quality Belt with holster and magazine pouches (quality Kydex such as CompTac, Raven Concealment, Bladetech suggested) SOFT NYLON HOLSTERS ARE STRONGLY DISCOURAGED FOR SAFETY REASONS.
- Belt pouches to carry pistol and rifle magazines are recommended
- 1000rds of rifle ammo
- 200rds of pistol ammo
- Rifle Sling (1 or 2 point, but NO 3-POINT SLINGS, NO CARRY STRAPS)
- Weapon cleaning kit (cleaning rod, bore brushes, patches, rags, cleaning & lubricating oil, toothbrush)
- Hat, Rain or inclement weather gear
- Wraparound Eye and ELECTRONIC Ear protection IS MANDATORY
- Water / Snacks (we’ll take an hour lunch break around noon, but we do NOT LEAVE THE RANGE)
- Sun Screen (non-greasy or water resistant recommended)

I suggest that you wear comfortable shoes, and clothing that you don’t
mind getting dirty.

Instructor: Kelly Hohnholz received his pistol instructor and shoothouse/cqb certification from MSG Paul Howe (RET) at CSAT and his training and instruction resume is available on request.

COST: 200.00 - PAYABLE BY CHECK, MONEY ORDER OR PAYPAL. PAYMENT WILL NEED TO BE RECIEVED NO LATER THAN 9-30-12 TO HOLD YOU CLASS SPOT. IF DEMAND WARRANTS IT, I WILL RUN A SECOND CLASS.

In.

I have yet to see Kelly on the range, but have enjoyed several of his classroom lectures. If you are looking for a good class that won't break the bank, there is no reason that you should not be attending.

I'm pretty tired after a faux intruder scare woke me up at midnight last night (wired for two hours), plus the Walking Dead is on in 30 minutes so I'll be brief.

TD1 showed up with wet frozen ground and temps in the high 20°s. There were 9 brave souls that showed up to brave the weather and expand their skill sets. Gear was pretty straight forwards, 4 of the class ran Aimpoints, 1 EoTurd, a Vortex Strikefire and the rest were iron shooters.

The Vortex Strikefire , which was on target, but shooting slightly left the morning of TD1, was 2.5 FEET left at 75 yards (approx 425rds) by 1600. Mount and optic are secure so that makes this the third Strikefire that has shown up to also be the third Strikefire that I have seen fail in class.

100% failure rate is what the police call a 'clue'.

The first day was basically a straight shot of safety, history, CSAT based drills, then into the standards, by the end of TD1, the entire class had shot the 10 CSAT rifle standards from start to finish both for accuracy and for time. After cleaning up the range, we had a issue with some vehicles getting mud bogged, but eventually managed to break free and get everyone home.

TD2 showed up much the same as TD1, but by 10am, it was in the high 40°s and quite nice. After shooting an aggregate 30rd competition (BatterySnare won a Battle Comp T-shirt) we moved into shooting the standards again, then remedial to polish up rough spots. After that we moved into hostage shots with the CSAT Mart-Kate module and then broke for lunch. After eating, we moved into unconventional shooting positions such as scuba prone, supine and urban prone. During the unconventional positions, we did have a hydration bladder burst as its owner flopped onto his back a bit too hard.

Finally we finished up the day with strong/weak side shooting on a set of VTAC barricades at 100m where the students were able to really push the boundaries of what it takes to go from a good 'square range shot', to a good hit under less than ideal circumstances. After the rifle portion was finished, a few of the students took some time to work the steel at 85m with their pistols, a fun way to polish fundamentals.

I'd like to thank the students for their hard work and effort even when things sucked, and BattleComp and Magpul for their generous donations and giveaways and looking forward to the next round of classes. (I'll try to get some pics uploaded later)
