THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I just moved to denver (englewood) and want to do some fishing in the area. Back in Missouri we had some streams that were stocked with rainbow and brown trout, and we had quite a lot of fun catching them. The fish were all farm raised. We caught them on berkley trout worms and rooster tails. I would like to find an area where i can catch a few around here. I have done some scouting but not actual fishing. I checked out green mountain reservoir, georgetown lake, lake dillon, and some of the feeder streams. Would i have a chance at catching some of these trout on spinning tackle? I bought some panther martins, rooster tales, and some berkley trout worms. Any advise?

Thanks....

Welcome to CO. You're pretty much going to find Rainbow trout in almost any body of water with fish in it in Colorado. Aurora Reservoir is a good place: no gas powered engines allowed so the water is clean and wakes from skiers are non-existent. If you don't mind dirty water and motor boats/jet skies, Chatfield and Cherry Creek Reservoirs are good. I've always only used one lure in Colorado for trout: the Kastmaster. It's a spinner, and the silver with blue stripe works the best, followed by the solid gold colored one. It will also catch Walleye and Bass like a champ. Works best when it's sunny out. If you're wanting to get away from the city, 11 mile reservoir is beautiful and has great fishing (also has the Salmon run every year but I've never got around to going). I've also stopped at random streams while cruising the mountains and caught trout on the Kastmaster. Had some fly fishers ask one time what I was using to catch what they couldn't on my normal rod & reel.

None worth listening to. Sometimes people just take themselves too seriously.

It's been a long time since someone with opinions about my fishing choices invited himself to my party.

just fished a still stream (would be running at a quick rate if it wasn't for the dry conditions) & the spotted & rainbows seemed to like the marshmallow over the salmon eggs, caught some on each.
there was plenty of insects for them to eat so it was hard to get them to bite.

Your in CO, so time to change how you fish.
Forget the spinners, any body of water that you would use them in is so polluted with engine oil from all the boats/or ground water contamination into the lake, you won't want to eat them anyway.

So either a fly fishing rod/ultra light weight rod and reel instead, with flies to drift down stream.

As for where to fish, the stream up around Decker has some good areas, but if you want to take the fish home, make sure that you are not in the catch and release part of the stream. Also, fly fishing in Lake Eldora is pretty good as well (top of boulder canyon above Boulder).

Be careful to read the regulations (and the signage at streams and lakes) to avoid being cited for using bait at a locale limited to artificial baits only. Also note the regulations classify plastic baits over a certain size as being outside the permitted "artificial" bait.

I'm also interested in some shooting... I brought an AR and a couple pistols out. Do any Denver area AR15 members ever have any shoots or get togethers?

I haven't been to one, check here: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_8_20/487297_HTF_Get_Together_.html

Every now and then some guys get together, last one I remember was the support Starbucks day.

I'm in Littleton so close to you. Shoot me a pm if you want to grab a beer. I mostly shoot at the family shooting center because it's close. If you are up for a range day let me know. Or you can always post up a get together and see who shows.

I would like to find a place to go shoot that doesnt cost so much. In MO there were free public ranges everywhere. I got a 4x4 truck if anyone knows of a place we could go outside the city?

You are not shooting in national forest land this summer.

If you don't mind a drive the public range between Buena Vista and Salida is pretty nice.

Otherwise, you are going to pay for access to a range - such as the range on Cherry Creek Reservoir State Park.

What about the range at the dump near keystone. Any idea if it's open with the fire ban?

In regards to fishing...

my 5 1/2 year old daughter just pulled in 3 12" Rainbow Trout with a Disney Princess fishing pole equipped with bobber and salmon eggs.

There were grown men crying holding their unbelievably expensive fly rods in their tricked out belly boats, wearing their fancy Orvis fishing outfits, and they were all empty handed.

We call her, "The Fish Slayer"

I went to georgetown this past weekend.... I caught 3 trout. I had a great time. There was some jerk with his two kids with him. He wouldnt let them even touch their poles. He was using them as an excuse to fish 4 rods. He didnt catch a thing haha!

I am hoping to get out in a couple of weeks. Im in the same situation, as i just got here and have no clue, but i am just going to go off whats on the DNRs web site for spots and just keep trying new ones. If i find some good places i will post up.

Edit:
And as far as shooting goes, im hoping that we get some more rain so they lift the fire bans. I hate going to ranges because i hate paying to be around idiots who are poorly educated on firearms and having to worry if im going to get shot.

Ummm, I would be more worried at getting shot at some of the Forest service sights than at a gun range. The rampart gun range (forest service land) was shut down because someone was shot and killed by an idiot.

This. You couldn't have paid me to shoot at Rampart Range range.

I just got a 16" walleye at cherry creek resivore (on my brother's boat).

I was fishing for blue cats since it was hot out, but ended up with a nice walleye. I had to let it go though (some bs rule it has to be 18"+).

Worm + weight.

Brother got a few bass, all little shits(let em go). He was using a 4" shallow runner lure.

A few days ago we went to Chatfield, no luck what so ever.

My brother did hook 5 fish on a 3" shallow runner, but did not land any. The fish were lucky enough to pop off every time.

Once again, I was fishing for cats. Used chicken liver, worms, and a lard / garlic mixture. (no bites, but tons and tons of algae)

I fish several front range lakes regularly. Silver/blue or gold kastmasters work well at Quincy and Aurora reservoir. The other possibility is Dynamic HD Trouts. They are like a Rapala, but designed here in Colorado...They work well. There's a great forum for fishing information if you really want to know about...well, any lake. Fishexplorer.com has a great community. Check it out. Flies are definitely the way to go most places, but with what you have and a couple kastmasters or spoons, shouldn't have any problems.
