My family is relocating to Fort Collins sometime in May/June. We lived in Parker for 7-1/2 years (99-2006) but moved to VA temporarily for a job opportunity. I'm finally moving back. We left CO with a 2 week old baby and we're coming back with 4 kids! Anyway, tell me about Fort Collins. Where to live, where not to live? I'm guessing I'll live in another town (Loveland, Windsor, etc.) and drive in for work. Any tips, etc., are appreciated. The only restuarant we use to go to up there is the Rio. I had a buddy that worked at Marlins Tire up there. Also, we'll be renting - anyone have a rental they would like to put a good family in?

I can't wait to get back to CO!

Welcome back... I grew up in Windsor and now live in Parker.

No idea for a rental, but if you end up buying I can recommend a good buyers agent.

I've lived here about 8 years now. There's not too many "shady" areas of town, and the parts that are, you'll know right off the bat because they look "shady".

Just make sure to deport to Boulder or Denver the number of libtards equal to the number of people you're moving in

Don't know the first thing about Fort Collins. But congrats on the move!

Pm me with living requirements. Ft Fun is going to cost you a lot more than out side that area. There are a fair amount of rentals, i suggest if ft fun is the area you want stya the hell away from the old town / csu area. CL NOCO area rentals,

Do some on line searching to get a feel for the area. IF you have a CCW now, as soon as you get settled apply with it to either Larimer or Weld cty for your CO CCW.

I grew up in loveland and now live in southern aurora/ parker. FOCO is nice, but then again I dont go up there that often anymore. I have a ton of friends that go to CSU,I went t college up there too. Youll know the bad parts of town when you see them. Most of the area is great for kids, Poudre school district is great. If you dont mind a commute Id also look in north loveland. Really starting to build that area up. Lots of stuff to do between FOCO-Loveland-Windsor/ Severance area. I reccomend staying away from greeley. Starting to get rougher up that way. But the other triangle plus the smaller towns are my kind of place to live. Will be trying to relocate up that way as soon as I get back from overseas.

Welcome back!

I like Marlen's Tire- they had a fellow Jeeper working there that dialed in my alignment after I lifted my Cherokee. Hooked me up with a great deal on some AR-767s, too.

Seems like most of my friends are living in the south part of FoCo since the town is getting pretty dense. The Windsor / Loveland / Johnstown thing is popular with people that want to spread out a bit.

Thanks! Jon Jacobs I'm guessing? He did a good bit of work on my Jeeps over the years. I was wondering what happened to him. I would prefer to live "out" a bit - not in a 1/10 acre subdivision.

Thanks for the ideas guys, keep 'em coming. I can't believe it is actually going to happen. Knowing my luck, the F'in Mayans are probably wrong about their dates & the world will end before I make it out!

That is the man- I sold the Jeep years ago and lost touch with the Colorado XJ folks. He had an absolutely sick Cherokee. If I recall he was talking about buidling a Wrangler after working over the unibody on the XJ. He'd drive that beast down to Moab and show everyone what a Cherokee could do!

Lived in Loveland/Ft Collins for quite a while. I like the East side of Fort Collins (newer, more expensive). Depends on your budget and expectations. Ft. Collins is a beautiful city, but especially in the Springtime. Loveland and Fort Collins both have very nice bike trail systems that you don't get everywhere.

Avg. Home price in Loveland is about $250k, in Fort Collins $292k.

Depends where your job is and how much you want to commute.
East side has quicker access to I-25. West side quicker access to horsetooth, the mountains, etc.
The biggest downside I saw to Ft. Collins was lack of places to shoot close by.
Tons of resuraunts/bars in the city though, and some of the best Microbrews in the US are right at your fingertips. Also have one of the best liquor stores in the state (IMO) @ Wilburs. My favorite restaurant is also there (Young's Cafe). I commuted from S. Loveland to CSU for 4 years- wasn't particularly fun.

Loveland is a nice place. Very family friendly but not as much stuff going on. Vibrant art community (newly restored historical theater, sculpture capital of the US), nice bike trails, some nice open space near Devil's backbone, close to Big Thompson Canyon and Rocky Mountain National park. Both towns are kind of spread out though. Lots of rural areas surrounding.

Hope any of this is helpful, feel free to shot me a PM if you have any specific questions.
Loveland is cheaper rent than Fort Collins, but you will probably end up spending more on gas.

Shady areas of Fort Collins would be the north end, and east Mullberry has some less than nice places to live in. I also live in Loveland (north end). Houses are cheaper here and the property tax is lower. We initially wanted to live in FTC when we moved here, but are glad that we bought in Loveland instead. Home values went down slightly here and there's a good market on houses. Also, by living in Loveland it's faster to go up to Estes Park and other areas. I offroad a bit and I can get to the trails alot quicker. Where I'm situated I can be in FTC in about 10 mins. There's a couple of ways to get into FTC from Loveland (287, LeMay, and Timberline). There are a couple of indoor shooting ranges in FTC, and north of FTC (about a half hour outside of town) is the Northern Colorado Rod and Gun Club. Nice place to shoot and a family membership is $95 a year. They take new members in August, so as soon as you get an address I would contact them to get on their waiting list.

Inca and 3 Margs are better than Rio. So is Los Tarascos.

What kind of work do you do? I love FoCo and won't move but my hour commute to Denver sucks.

Traffic is a little worse. Other than that, it's the same old town.

3 Margaritas better than the Rio Grande? Heresy. I'll take fresh local food over 2nd rate chain resturaunts anyday.

But seriously I hope you like beer. New Belgium, Odells, Fort Collins Brewing are just a few of the many excellent local microbrews. They also apparently have at least 3 of the best 20 beer bars in the country. Throw in Coopersmiths and C.B. & Potts brewpubs and you've got a nice little area for beer.

I really liked the bike trail system too. And decent amount of concerts and cultural activities.

Don't know about 3 margs. What i do know is the rio has the shittest crap that only drunk college kids and misinformed anglo's feel is good mexican.
If it wasn't for the marg's and CSU they would have shut down years ago. I'd eat a burrito from one of the few taco trucks on the north side before the rio.

The concert / music scene in ft fun is great. FOCOMX is coming up in April, well worth the price of admission, then some.

3 Margs beans and rice isn't the best, that honor goes to Inca. However, their crispy chile rellenos are nothing short of awesome.

I had some of Inca's puntas de albanil the other night. Hmmmm, good.

I'm bummed that the Armadillo isn't as good as it used to be in the early 90s and 80s... Their Green Chile was amazing.

Wilbur's Total Beverage is an awesome liquor store with a huge beer selection and good sometimes amazing prices on wine. I wish I was closer to them.

Raising Canes has the best fresh-made chicken strips I've ever had.

I also like Tortilla Marissa's for mexican food. Don't know if they are still open. They had some Shrimp and Portabella mushroom quesadillas that were amazing. Authentic? Not a chance.

Tortilla Marissas's is a nice place- like you said, not authentic, but their tostadas are very good.

We like Tres Margaritas. They have damn good chicken mole, chile colorado and chile verde. Get some hot salsa to go with it, you won't be disappointed. I've had the chile colorado at Inca, and it was excellent, too.

No one mentioned Taqueria Los Comales yet? Best damn street tacos in town.

Don't rent, buy my house!!!

I have not been to the Rio in a long time but liked their food. Inca and 3 Margs are also good.

Like others have said there are not very many bad areas in town.

Having quite a bit of trouble finding a place to rent. 90% of rentals are for students (sh!t condition) and the other 10% are either too small or in subdivision hell. It is tough when you need a 4 or 5 bedroom house! Anyone drive (daily) from Livermore to Fort Collins? Does it suck?

Fort Collins has a law that prohibits any more than 3 people not related to each other from renting a dwelling together. It keeps the problem of having 10 college kids from living in a 3 bedroom apt. What you'll probably find are scarce are 1-2 bedroom apts and homes, but 3 or more should be easier. When we moved here my wife tried some site like fortcollinsrentals.com, or something similar, and found quite a few listings.
