Seattle Tunnel Partners has started digging the circular pit crews will use to access and repair Bertha, the SR 99 tunneling machine. On Friday evening, Oct. 17, an excavator rolled into position to the west of the Alaskan Way Viaduct near Pier 48, where STP stopped tunneling last December after Bertha overheated. There, crews began taking the first scoops of soil from what will become a 120-foot-deep, 80-foot-wide pile-supported pit.

not that anyone ever said something like this would happen. Just sayin'....again...

I remember a state official saying the extra work/delay wouldn't cost the taxpayers anything!
Yeah right.. |

Why can't they just back it up? what a stupid design.... are they going to have to do this every 1000 feet?
can't believe it's been almost a year. they're going to bore forward 45' to get to the access pit... sounds like it's working to me. I wish there where penalties for being stupid. |

Once (if) this TBM pops out they need to turn it back around and bore additional lanes for I-5.
Then they need to move on to additional tunnel projects: 1. bore I-90 from MP 42 or so to Cle Elum or Thorp. Undergound parking area below Snoqualmia Pass with elevators. 2. bore through Indian John hill. 3. bore through Vantage hill 4. bore into the cliff across the Columbia and come up at a slight grade in George Moses Lake. 5. Bore SR 410 directly from Greenwood to um, Cliffdell, or at least that gate on the east side of the pass. 6. Bore under Colockum ridge between Ellensburg and Wenatchee 7. Bore the three ridges between Ellensburg and Yakima. 8. Bore through Kennydale hill on I-405. |

Of course, this happened a few days ago:
http://blogs.seattletimes.com/today/2014/10/work-on-berthas-repair-pit-halted-after-shell-material-discovery/ When digging through fill in the waterfront of what used to be prime Native American real estate, it's guaranteed that this is going to happen a handful more times if this project ever continues forward again. |

Bertha is apparently sinking and engineers are evaluating the situation.
The good news is the extra work will not cost taxpayers anything according to DOT. Sure; |
|
The way this project is going, the contractor will be filing bankruptcy about January 2nd 2015.
Then the taxpayers will be getting the real bill for this project |
|
I'm willing to bet $5 that this project never comes to completion
|

But, but didn't Chrissy, Inslee, and a few others go to Boston, to see what went wrong and what went right so that wouldn't happen here? She said their mistakes would not happen here.

Its a toll tunnel. Did everyone know that or is this news? And the damn thing is sinking? Fuck me, I am never going to drive in that thing.
I have a saying, don't do something unless you can survive 2 minutes if things go tits up. |

By the time they get done with it the Alaskan Way Viaduct will have sunk to the roadbed.

King Street is sinking. SEATTLE - City and state transportation officials closed a street adjacent to the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Project in Seattle because a portion of the road was cracked and sinking. Concerns about structures and the viaduct near Pioneer Square were raised this week when transportation officials reported their monitors detected at least an inch of settlement near the tunnel-repair access pit. They say the removal of groundwater may have caused the soil to settle. Mayor Ed Murray held a news conference Thursday at the sinking road on First Ave. South and South King Street to say the problem is being investigated, but the cause was unknown. Murray also says they don't have any data to indicate that any of the buildings in the area are at risk. He says their first concern is public safety. View Quote |

I have always been a supporter of the surface, 6 lane road that was option two IIRC. The damn thing would gave been built by now and would be a controversy of the past. This boondoggle would be roll on floor funny if it didn't cost a fortune.

This whole boondoggle is infuriating. They should have rebuilt the viaduct at full size. Fucking corrupt socialist retards in the City Council.

This tunnel is being built at the request of the powerful owners of the land on the waterfront. The much less risky and visually-pleasing option of "cut and cover" was rejected because you could not build large structures on top of the completed "cut and cover" "tunnel". A deep tunnel boring machine was the only way to accommodate developers wishing to build up the waterfront.
Personally, I don't see why we didn't re-build the viaduct. There are plenty of well-proven earthquake-proof elevated roadways in this world. |

The land where the current road must be worth a FORTUNE, for developers AND for future PROPERTY TAX revenue to the City.... And if the view that once was blocked by the viaduct is cleared, home value goes up too....... |

Developers win either way. If the tunnel is successfully built and the viaduct demolished, they get to develop the waterfront.
If the tunnel caves in and makes the entire waterfront infrastructure unstable to the point that it needs to be raised completely, and the seawall rebuilt or extended, they still get to develop the waterfront. There are a lot of buildings between the waterfront an 1st street that are ancient, and developers would love to have a convenient scapegoat for knocking them down and rebuilding. "Oh, gee, the ground sunk and this building is now condemned. Too bad, better knock it down." Win-win. |

So now the news today is that a major water main on 1st street is beginning to bend under the settling soil, and has suffered enough damage that it will need to be replaced.. Meaning, now 1st street has to be torn up as well.
http://crosscut.com/2014/12/16/transportation/123263/will-bertha-crack-open-pioneer-squares-urban-renew/ So, work on the access pit to repair Bertha has stopped due to the settling problems. With the exception of the work being performed on the tunnel entrances on either end, the project is currently 100% stalled. Bertha has not moved in over a year - since Dec 6th 2013. Frankly I wonder if someone could float an initiative for the next election that will require the project be canceled. It doesn't look like they're going to be able to repair Bertha and move on without literally destroying Pioneer Square, and it's only going to get worse if Bertha starts moving again. |
