I remember being told many moons ago that there was /is a rabbit problem on the San Juan Islands and that the populaton there is very happy to see persons with firearms relieve them of the problem. Is this still true? If yes, which Island?

Does not sound like any islander that I have ever heard of. The hippy/bleeding heart crowd is large out there. But I cannot dispel this rumour, just doesn't coincide with the story's I've heard from people who want to hunt deer out there.

Don't know about recent history, but way back in ancient history I hunted rabbits on San Juan Island (which had the biggest rabbit population).

Some farmers charged a fee to hunt in their fields and there was no limit and no license requirements. There was a pretty general requirement for the use of shotguns only. Just sit still near the rabbit holes and wait for some to come on up, then pop them with the shotgun, doesn't even require much walking around. Of course, not really much like "hunting" either.

Lots of rabbits to shoot. They were primarily offspring of domestic belgian hares that had been released, probably left over from Easter. As non-native they were not considered game, also meant they did not suffer from the common parasites and diseases to which the rabbits in Eastern WA are subject.

As I say though, this was in ancient times and I have no idea the current status of such things.

Sorry Bunny, but it was long before we met. By the wway, when you coming by?

Also many years ago we hunted the wabbits on Friday Harbor Island. They charged like 5$ a day--don't remember exactly. We also went with a local at nite and used a lite to makeum stand still and netted them. Back then you could ride in the back of his truck and scoop them up as you drove by.

That is one of the back when I was a kid stories that was more fun than a person should have and required alchohol to survive going thru the fields after dark hooping, hawlering and trying to hang on.

The only thing to hunt out here is LIBERALS. they see a gun and run. I wear my AR15.com T shirt all the time just to piss em off. Deer are running the place over!
There are three things in abundance, deer, dope and illegals!

I grew up in Friday Harbor during the time you are referring to, it died in the early 80's. My first introduction to J shaped curve populations.

All the rabbits bred, well like bunnies, and over populated themselves into oblivion. The rabbit population is growing again, but nothing like it was in the 70's.

There used to be "rabbit cars." A local would take a beater car, take the doors off, weld a seat to the front bumper, everybody would liquor up, then somebody would strap themselves into the seat, the driver would chase a bunny, the guy in the seat would try to use a net and scoop the bunny up. If the guy in the seat could grab them by the ears the local honeys would fuck them stupid because they were a real stud. This was before VHS porn and the Internet.

EMTs and the fire department routinely pulled and patched up locals who had driven into blackberry bushes. Rabbits were killed at will. Last time I saw someone shoot a rabbit was 1986 and Jason Black shot one during lunch out near Bailer Hill road. This was back when guns on school property (in this case, the school parking lot) was nothing to call 911 about.

Now let us talk about real estate. The most expensive real estate is in the San Juan Islands and has been for the last ten years. You can thank the cocksuckers from down south, and I'm not talking Tijuana.

Currently if you shoot a rifle, there is a good chance you will blow out somebodies $4,000 picture window in their 2.5 million dollar house. They probably won't care since they only spend a weekend there ever two years. Fucking douche-bag nozzle's. So the chance at getting permission to kill something is slim to none unless you know someone or like poaching. That is why the deer population is out of control. Once again thank the cocksuckers from down south. And I'm not talking about Olympia.

In all truthfulness I never knew there was a "deer season" until I was 11. We used to shoot the deer in the garden when they started becoming a pain. To this day I still remember the incredulous feeling I had when I found out that you "had" to "pay" for a "license" to "shoot" deer and you were "limited" to how many you could shoot in a "season."

As for farmers, there are no longer the farmers we are used to contacting for hunting deer, ducks, rabbits, and cows (only when no-one is looking) on the island. The farmers were bought out by people who like to grow things. The things they like to grow is grapes for wine, lavender, and echinachia. Wine is something liberals drink, lavender is something used to make you smell funny after or during bathing, and echinacia is something you take when you don't feel well.

People who drink wine, smell good, and worry about their health are liberals, and you ain't hunting on their land any time soon.

Dope is no longer the side cash crop there, lavender and other garden herbs are. It is still easier to bring dope in from BC then grow it. Also "organic" lavender costs more per once then dope. Even hippies like money. Which means they are capitalists, which means they are conservative, which means they are Republicans and hypocrites. And that is why I hate hippies. Everyone I grew up with who wore a tie-dyed Grateful Dead T-shirt and went to Woodstock was a money grubbing capitalist whore.

In my professional opinion, it looks like something happens... and then something different happens... and then shit fucks up and he fucking crashes.
