Starting March 5th, the Tamaqua Rifle and Pistol Club will begin holding rimfire sporter matches. Currently scheduled for the first Saturday of most months from March through November. They are a good practice in shooting without a bench and are an introduction to formal rifle competition such as High Power, National Match, and others without the equipment investment. Shot at 50 and 25 yards from three different field positions (standing, kneeling or sitting, and laying prone), it includes both slow fire and rapid fire stages. The rapid fire stages are relaxed compared to most time based shooting events. You will have 25 seconds to fire a 5 shot string, 30 seconds if you bring a lever, bolt, or other manually operated rifle. They are currently unsanctioned, future matches will be sanctioned with the CMP if there is sufficient attendance. M&P15-22's, 10/22's, and 22 conversions are popular. In addition to the three CMP classes, we are also running an 'unlimited' class for any rifles that don't quite make the specs such as 22 uppers and conversions or fun guns like the gsg stg44.

The morning of the March 5th match there will be a free 'half-course' practice match starting at 10:30am.

Iron sights only or are scopes and red dots allowed?

Any iron sights or any scopes that can be set to 6x or less (red dots are considered 1x scopes by most) are allowed within the 3 official classes. Unlimited class we're running alongside them, you can use any sights or scope on any weight 22lr you show up with as long as it can hold at least 5 cartridges with an empty chamber.

Should at least be a fun match on the 5th. Forgot to include in the original posting, recommending everyone bring a shooting mat, sheet, or carpet remnant if they have one available. Grass firing line. Scrounged a few shooting mats to loan out for anyone that needs one, but probably not enough for everyone.

The way the weather has been the past two week hoping to not have a rain delay the first match. Three trips there in the past two weeks and its looked like a different season each time.

I wasn't able to make this first match due to a family emergency... How was the turnout?

Two less than our initial estimate for an inaugural match. One adult, 2 juniors, and a club officer spectator. Only ran the free practice match, full 60 shots for record instead of a half-course. Still only took about 45 minutes compared to the budgeted hour and a half. Club record currently is a 500-4x out of a possible 600. Shot with a M&P15-22 with I believe a nikon p223 series optic.

Consensous was the cold weather chased everyone off. By the time I got home had a voicemail and text asking how the turn out was and both mentioning the 20F temps this morning. At least got some bugs worked out of the line commands specific to the club, the defacto volunteer for help at future matches starting to get trained, and put 50 yard zero's on two loaner rifles before the match in case someone has a bad day and winds up with a disabled rifle.

Next match is April 2nd, sign up at 12-12:45. Should be warmer, just hopefully dry.

Weather channel, accuweather, and wnep are all over the place with their forecasts for tommorow afternoon. Just cloudy, isolated showers, or showers. In the event of rain in the afternoon at the range, the match will be postponed until next Saturday, April 9th. In any case should at least be in the 50s by afternoon so about 10 degrees warmer than last month that chased alot of people away.
