Friend has a friend that is going to be in Pittsburgh for a convention. She asked me if I knew any good places for dinner.
She also thinks I live closer to Pittsburgh than is the case. So, any locals have some recommendations?

I’m sure others will chime in, here’s a few places.

Monterey Bay Fish Grotto Nice view of the city, but pretty pricey.
A bunch of other places that overlook the city on Grandview avenue also.

Tons of bars & restaurants on the Southside, I’m a fan of Fathead's

Some breweries for good food & beer.
Penn Brewery
Church Brew Works
Hofbrauhaus

I guess Primanti Brothers is worth a mention.
Two star dining when sober, five star dining after a good night of drinkin’.

Hope this helps.

Pittsburgh Mag tends to cater to the ritzy crowd. While some people put me into that category, my wife and I stay away from those sorts of restaurants and Pittsburgh is 45 mins from me in light traffic.

Here are my choices, but they are 45 minutes to an hour from Pittsburgh.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/PACIS-LOUNGE-DINING/110275895677714 My favorite dish here is, Homemade Gnocchi. Aunt Della's signature dish, served with homemade meatballs, Rosa or traditional sauce.

http://www.alanrubens.net/  My choice here is, Con Saliccia. Sweet Italian sausage sauteed  with assorted bell peppers,. mushrooms and onions in a plum herb sauce tossed with spaghetti, served with a side salad

Both of these places have awesome real homemade food.

I'm still mourning the loss of Tamari.

Happy hour bacon wrapped quail eggs with ponzu butter.    Gone forever

They have quite a few good eats, their burgers are really good and LARGE, same for their salads. Reubens are great and so is their sub called the Wolfie.
If you like wings and like'em hot try their Grim Reapers, as stated earlier I been getting their wings with Bacon Parm Ranch sauce.. messy as hell!
Now be warned, the place is rather a dive as their dining area has been a work in progress for a long time, it seems they replace or paint a few tiles at a time a month hehe but the food is legit.

They are about a mile or so past Pacis.

All excellent suggestion above. I would also like to add:

Meat And Potatoes

its sister restaurant (go for the brown liquor) Butcher and the Rye

and one of my favorite restaurants of ALL TIME

Grand Concourse (I personally just enjoy hanging out in the Gandy Dancer pub)
