Just moved here this year, and I'd love to get out and get a turkey for T-day. Anyone know of decent areas around the Pittsburgh area that are public, or large swaths of land which the owners are OK with people hunting on?

Well if you don't know any farmers, you can use the state game lands to hunt on.  Turkeys are everywhere. I have 2 flocks of them on my land everyday. that's like 40 birds.

check out this map for public lands... you have to zoom in to see the yellow dots that are generally the parking areas. http://pgcmaps.pa.gov/pgcpublicviewer/

Thanks for the map! Now I'm looking at the legend, and I have an area near me that says it has small game, turkey and trapping restrictions. Does that mean that the area is restricted to just small game, turkey, and trapping; or is it the other way around, where it's just big game?

Pretty sure it means its open to all hunting, but there are special rules that may vary from the norm concerning that specific  game.

Ok, I was just looking at a spot that was about a mile away, but apparently there's a SGL plot 13 miles from me (along with a public shooting range). Hopefully it's good bird territory.

Edit: now what are "400 area" lands? Google isn't giving me shit.

I didn't study the map, nor am I an expert on sgl rules. I hunt on private property and shoot at a club.

I will assume u are talking about Wexford. I wouldn't go near that place for hunting. Too many people and the range tends to attract idiots.

I'm on my phone... But if you want search pa forum and see other posts about private ranges or I'm me and I can get you pointed in the right direction.

I was indeed talking about Wexford. That sucks to hear that the range attract idiots, but it doesn't really surprise me.

that's what public ranges do.

there are some super great ranges up in that area, also some really great hunting spots...  gimme a day or so to put something together for you.  what direction do you live from wexford, so I can find something closer to your home.

Could check out the game lands off of 22 out in the Burgettstown area. A good bit of land there. Lots of game lands down here in Greene county too. Turkeys are getting crazy high in population the last few years it seems too.

The Following clubs are recommended but I don't know if the are accepting memberships.

http://www.mcdonaldsportsmen.com/index.htm  In McDonald PA. They host USPSA matches and rifle matches... many are open to non members.

https://sites.google.com/site/mscigen2/clubhouse  This is Millvale gun club. Located close to the Wexford exit.

Carrick Sportsmans Club. This is a small range located in South Park twp. They don't have a real long rifle range, but they do have a nice indoor range and trap/ skeet

  • 3301 Ridge Rd

  • South Park, Pennsylvania 15129

  • (724) 348-7941

  • http://www.pmsconline.com/pmsc/?q=facilities  this is the nicest club in the area, located in North Versailles.

For  hunting I would go Southeast ... not real far though, just out past Perryopolis, Ive seen some real nice deer taken from out that way in the SGL's., especially #296 Jacobs Creek. Its over 2000 acres and  has Turkey and Deer.

Some closer options to the west and southwest are #117...a lot of small game, deer too.

#303 sports grouse, deer and fox

    #232  rabbit and squirrel

One club no mentioned yet Allegheny Country, would be a 15~20 minute drive from the casino. Pretty nice club, haven't been there in a while.

Agree with all that's been mentioned on the Wexford gamelands,
