I work in the aircraft manufacturing business, as an inspector of in progress work.  Basically they build it, I make sure they did it correctly.

Is there any work along those lines north of Phoenix?   I'd really rather be more in the Flagstaff area. My company has a couple places in Chandler and Deer Park, but it's engineering, and not far enough north.

I'm ready to get out of Dallas.

Hmmmmm, I doubt it.  I don't know of any aircraft manufacturing in northern AZ at all.  There might be, but I have never heard of it.  There might be something at the Prescott Airport, so you may want to give them a call.

At Prescott airport, they have Cobham Avionics and Embry-Riddle has their maintenance facility. Other than that, there are some machine shops in the area, but that's about it aviation construction wise. The only real manufacturer I know in of in Arizona is the AH-64 factory in Mesa.

Winston-Wolf works for Boeing down south. That's the guy OP needs to talk to.

I don't see much potential for the AVN field here up north unless AZ_Sky or luvmyglock knows something that I don't know.

There's Northrop in PV and Embry flight school in Prescott. I'm sure there are a couple more companies around the airport but there are jobs to be for qualified individuals. Ruger is hiring vets in the Prescott plant in various positions if you want to try something new.

Ruger website shows only engineers in Prescott.  Got any other leads there?

Boeing and Northrup are good leads, sadly it's all down south according to their websites.  I know a few reps for both companies here at work, I'll go talk with them.

Ruger doesn't list all their openings on their website but my contact says they're looking for quality control specialist and firearm testers. There's also Lockheed Martin and Yampa Precision (a huge manufacturing company).

ask your source if he knows a pay range.  from what I'm seeing housing is quite a bit more than I'm used to.

I need to spend a week or so in the area to get a feel for it....

Ultimately, the final question as to whether you can move here is this: Can you afford to pay Rizzo's Ammo Tax?

I appreciate the replies. I'm going to start visiting areas and seeing cost of living and such.  I'd rather not Phoenix, but that is where most of the jobs are. It would be a very significant pay cut from what I'm seeing, so everything else would need to be damn near free.

Property tax in TX vs AZ is night and day, you'll be happy in that sense.

Is Tucson an option?  Personally I much prefer it to Phoenix.  If so, Raytheon might have something up your alley.  Sargent Controls is another defense and aerospace company here that might have a position that fits you.

I'm trying to get north, closer to mountains.  We're going to prep the house for sale, pay off some debt, spend time in  few cities, then reevaluate. 6 months or so I figure..

Tucson has mountain ranges on all four sides and two of them are really good for recreation, Catalinas and Rincons.  The problem with the northern part of the state is that they don't have a lot of economic growth and opportunities.  I know people that make it work for them, but wages tend to be low and the cost of living is high.  My wife and I lived in Flagstaff for a year, but the cost of living drove us back down south.  In Tucson, we make more money and have lower expenses.  Even my water bill is lower, despite the fact that I did no outdoor watering in Flag and have a sprinkler system in my fully planted back yard here in Tucson.  The northern part of the state is beautiful, it just is harder to make a living in.

Another consideration is to see if any of the military bases have either civilian or contract jobs within aviation

I'd say look at Tucson-  it's a "ski town" still.  It's still hot in town, no doubt about it.   Just north of town is a small town called Oracle and it's 10-15 degrees cooler.  North of town there is a huge airfield that does aircraft upgrades and instillation.   We also have some areas down south of us that get high that would be a painful but doable commute to Raytheon, think 45-1:00.   Called Sonota or Patagonia, freaking beautiful wine country.
