She got a letter from AZGFD inviting her to a youth Pheasant hunt up in Mayer, says it's because she was so well behaved and paid attention in her youth hunter course.

Totally free, guided hunt, with a bird dog.

She's stoked!

That's a great weekend for the kids. I helped on that hunt a couple times when I was an active Hunt. Ed. instructor. I think I got as much out of it as the kids.

She will be completely taken care of from start to finish. The only thing you need to do is get the taxidermist lined up. When I showed the first couple of kids how to dress their pheasant for a mount, every kid after wanted one.

Congrats to your young lady!

That's awesome! I remember the thread where she got the cow elk with the 6.5 Grendel. I bet she'll have a blast!

That's lucky.  I always wondered what happened to Chauncey Ranch.  They tried canned pheasant hunts way back when and failed.  So it looks like it gets donated to charity and tax free for kids work.  Good for them.

Looks like you can do archery pheasant. That'd be interesting.  20ga probably would be easier, though.

I'm jealous.

Interesting, they say they've been in operation since 1972.  Maybe I'm thinking of a different pheasant ranch in Mayer.

Had the hunt today!

Great thing they put on.  It's sponsored primarily by the National Wild Turkey Federation and Arizona Outdoor Sports.  They had a short shotgun shooting seminar with Tom Slaughter of AOS and then went to the clays range.  All the kids had a chance to break some clays with a professional shooter.  Then, off to the fields where they provided a dog handler, a dog, a flusher, and a mentor.

Each group had 2 kids, 6 birds total in the field.  The kid she was with shot one on the ground that wouldn't fly, then my daughter knocked one out of the sky, they both missed birds 3, 4, 5, and bird 6 my daughter hit in the tail, then the 2nd kid knocked it down.  So, they both got one on the wing!  Super awesome!

There was a taxidermist set up there with a very special price for the kids so my daughter decided to have her bird mounted (we will get the meat later next week).

With the shooting instructor:

Knocking one down!  If you look close you can see the puff of feathers as my daughter hit it, then the other boy finished it.  Nice teamwork!

Heading back after the hunt:

Success!
