Who else is going deer killin' on Monday with the rest of the once a year hunters?
|
|
[#1]
It's gun season now in WV, I'm in my treestand surfin ARFcom. Hit a forked spike Monday with the pistol, couldn't find him, only seen doe n fawn since. Mix of rain and snow now, nothing moving.
I was gonna try to get out in OH Monday at least, but looking like I'll be stuck at work. Good luck, whack em n stack em, tired of swervin around em on the roads! |
|
[#2]
I'll be out. I'll have two tags so the first one I see that looks more than six months old is going down.
I slacked on getting equipped with the newest allowable equipment, so I'll either have my shotgun, muzzle loader, or pistol, no carbine for me yet. |

I usually can't make a call or send a txt from the cabin, but the other side of the mountain in my treestand, I get a decent 4G signal.
ETA, between surfin ARFcom, I managed to put down a button buck and a bobcat with the rifle. Hit a 4pt with the pistol, but lost his trail after he hit a stream. The next day we got about 3" of snow, coulda used that a day sooner. |

Just looking for meat. I'm not a trophy hunter. I didn't change weapons either, still using my FN SLP with rifled slugs. I am hoping the suppressors for hunting is approved. I'm thinking about a Ruger M77, 44 mag with a 45 cal suppressor. |

This will be my first year hunting. I am trying on my measly 8 acres. Using the kids treehouse as a blind. At least I will be comfortable.
Wife wants a nice buck for above the fireplace. She doesn't know that I will shoot anything just to be successful my first year out. |
|
[#7]
I am.
I've already been out to Colorado this year however for elk / bear / mule deer. Bought 1 tag + my landowner's tags. Bought and customized a Marlin 1895 GBL. Base 1895GBL XS sight system (ghost ring) XS sight rail Bear proof follower Bear proof extractor Trigger job (about 4.5lbs) Action job Duracoated Matte black Topped with warne steel rings, Leupold VX-3 1.5-5, German #4 Sighted it in @ 100 yards with Winchester Supreme dual bond 375gr rounds. Had about 1.75in group~ish. Not bad, as it was windy and snowing when I was sighting it in. |

It's easier to stay put in that, so when everybody else is walking around or going to lunch they can push the deer to you. |

[#9]
I will be down at the cabin all week. I really don't need/want one but a few friends will always take them. I just like to be there all week to keep an eye on the place. Haven't missed a beer, or I mean deer week in over 20 years. Plus it gave me good reason to buy a Marlin 1894 in .44 this summer.
|
|
[#10]
Yep. Been doing pretty good past couple of years. Go out with my father in law and a bunch of other guys.
|
|
[#11]
I can't get out Monday but I have Thursday to Sunday off so I'll be out then with my new Marlin 1894FG .41mag.
|
|
[#12]
I'm hunting deer in a new place, so I did some scouting this afternoon. The fields are a muddy mess.
Lot's of deer tracks and droppings and the farmers next door do a lot of pushing. |
|
[#13]
You'll Shoot you eye out kid..
To many loonies in the field for me... |
|
[#14]
All packed and ready to go. I'll be hunting from the ground this year so we'll see how it goes.
|
|
[#15]
I've got two stands up, I'll probably chose the wrong one in the morning I still need to pack my lunch, but for the most part, everything I took with me last year is pretty much the way I left it.
Looks like it's going to be a lot colder, especially so up in the tree. |

My oldest and I will be out in the AM using the ground blind I got him for his B-day this year. We used Shotar's blind last year with success. I had never used a ground blind prior to then and was surprised how well it worked. Beats sitting up in a tree freezing. We take a "Little Buddy" heater and can sit in one spot all day. We even use the heater to warm our lunch.
I paid my dues sitting in stands when the temp was 0, I also sat in the cold pouring rains. I'll take the ground blind during gun season over a tree stand. |

[#19]
I am probably going.
I will be hunting on my own property (which takes a lot of the fun out of it for me). I am not a big hunter anymore. I am not so sure I was ever a big hunter but I used to hunt.a lot more than I do now which is almost never. FWIW: the thing that killed it for me was that I used to hunt with other guys and it was fun. I don't enjoy it enough to go by myself. But, since I can use a rifle this year, I am going to at least make some effort. I am going to be using a Marlin lever action in .45/70 I will just walk down into the woods and sit down with my back against a tree. And I am sure I will see deer. I shot one there a few years ago with a .44 mag pistol. I have seen loads of deer there in the past. I probably won't shoot the first deer that I see, but then again, who knows. I have a tendency to sit there and see all kinds of deer but when I think about the work involved in getting them out of the woods, I let them walk. It would be a drag, straight up hill the whole way. I don't own a four wheeler. So, I tell myself that it has to be a decent buck in order for me to go through that much effort. But in reality I am just lazy. |

View Quote The tree stand doesn't bother me at all, so long as it isn't super cold and the wind isn't blowing in my face. It also helps if I can get in and sat down without breaking a sweat. I'm in much, much better shape than I was the last time I used the climber, and my walk from the truck is shorter this year, so I should be golden in that regard. I might do the ground blind if I'm hunting during Muzzle Loader season, or it rains. |

[#22]
If I can get off Saturday, I'll be roaming around Fulton Co.
Hopefully the deer don't sneak up on me this year. |
|
[#23]
Here I sit.
Haven't seen anything yet. Other than the blaze orange blob about 50-75 yards to my left which is another hunter trespassing on my property. Jefferson County checking in. |
|
[#24]
Nothing here yet either.
Mahoning county checking in. Edit: My ass is wet and I forgot my tree stand pad. |
|
[#25]
I've only heard one, maybe two shots so far.
I also managed to leave my shotgun at home so I'm hunting with the pistol this morning. |
|
[#26]
Just had one go by, obviously spooked. I didn't have a shot. It probably ran through my yard on its way out.
Heard someone yelling shortly before. Calling someone's name. Way to be stealthy. Trespassers left in pursuit. They were carefully tracking. Only they were going the wrong way. The deer went right, they went left. They never saw me Just heard my first shot. |
|
[#27]
Heard my 5th shot. Sounded very small. 410 or maybe a 357 mag.
I'm gonna make people shit bricks when my 45-70 goes off. Earth shattering kaboom. |
|
[#28]
It was a war zone in southern morrow county this morning.
Too many city slickers out hunting during gun season for me. Too dangerous for me. |
|
[#29]
Someone started World war 3 around my property.
20+ shots in under 2 minutes |
|
[#30]
More trespassers down in front of me now.
It's a given that people are going to be hunting my property and I don't have a big issue with it. The thing that pisses me off is that they don't know what the hell they are doing. They sit ON the trails. They move around. They make noise. They can't sit still. They get up and walk around. These arnt city people. These are just local hillbillys. |
|
[#31]
Just dropped an 8 point.
50 yards from my tree stand. Didn't move a foot. 45-70 ftw |

I avoided the orange army today, got off a hellish shift at work last night and went out to one of my urban hunting spots in New Albany. I mainly went to check my trail cam and relax with my bow, but someone stole my trail camera. Second cam stolen this year. Wednesday/Thursday I'll hit the woods with the 45-70 when the crowds have all gone back to work or their trailer. ETA lets see some success pics! |

[#41]
No luck for me today.
I didn't hear a shot until after 8:00 and very few in the morning. Jumped 3 walking back to my truck after my buddy texted me come join him. Saw two more with him and we both shot at one of them, but she lived to die another day. I thought I was impatient, my buddy (the land owner where I was hunting) is more impatient than I am. He moved around a lot. Still, a relaxing day in the field and not at work. I may get back out Friday evening and/or Saturday morning. |

Well, to get this thread on track with if it's brown it's going down. A day later, I bring you pics. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/254940858/deer1.jpg 8 point buck. Probably physically, the largest Ohio deer I've ever seen (and shot.) The antler base is over 2 inches thick. 45-70 picture included. Same with my dad's old 500, that's slain more deer then years I've been alive. Shot was through and through, hit the top side of the lungs, blew the spine clean out as well. He was dead before he hit the ground. And yes, I like UA stuff. The orange vest is very much water resistant and drys fast. The hat has seen 3 trips to Colorado. Rest of the gear is Russel APX2 stuff that they stopped making, which is sad. Whole set was about a grand. Was an 8 piece set. View Quote Nice. That's a big buck, especially for gun season. It seems rare for nice bucks to be taken during gun season. |

I went out this afternoon. Didn't see anything but there were tracks everywhere. I should be able to get out most of the next two days so I'm optimistic.
I'm jealous of the rifle, I wish I'd have put some effort into getting one this year. |
