I will be traveling to Ohio by vehicle in May. I am a Texas resident with a Texas CHL. Ohio does not have a reciprocal agreement with Texas .I will be staying several days. What are my options. Can I keep the firearm in a locked box, etc. Since Dayton is my destination and I am not just passing through, Federal law does not apply.

probably the easiest is to get a utah nonresident permit which has reciprocity with OH. If you can't do that fast enough you can still transport the firearm unloaded, but by OH definition that includes no loaded magazines.

w/out a recognized CHL, ...the following transport method would be advised:

- guns in bags/cases/etc, preferably in a part of the vehicle that requires you to get out to access (trunk..), ...for trucks and minivans, just put them toward the back... ammo may or may not be stored in separate bags/cases, ...just make sure no, absolutely none, magazines have ammo in them... no ammo in guns, no ammo in mags (or speedloaders)... there is an exception for en-bloc clips and stripper clips, ..those may have ammo in them, ..but cannot be in the gun, and no ammo in the gun..

w/ a recognized CHL, ...this is relaxed, but for handguns only..

The only folks in Ohio who carry concealed have Ohio (or reciprocity state) licenses. Anyone believe that? I don't.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I'm from TX with a TX CHL that is not honored here. I worked here for four months last year and this year will be similar. I was covered by reciprocity into KY but unloaded and rearranged before entering OH to stay legal. I recently emailed the TX attorney general asking why we don't have reciprocity and got some form letter with a bunch of gobbledygook about how TX honors any state that does NICS checks. Does OH do NICS checks for a license? If that is not the problem what is it? Which state is holding it up?

My research tells me that OH does not have a travellers law that allows carry in a vehicle without a license like TX does so carry in my truck is out here. What I don't know about is keeping the gun loaded in a hotel room. Is that legal? The gun I have with me is a Bulgarian Makarov, not the gun I would choose in a situation but it is reliable and accurate and did not cost a lot. Removing the slide is very easy and since the barrel is pinned to the frame there are no loose parts to deal with if I want to take the slide with me and leave a useless frame and loaded mags hidden in my room. Again is this all legal?

Are you planning to hold up a liquor store? If not, how is anyone to know what's in your car?

I am not planning a holdup, but traveling with a friend. I always want to be legal. In the event of a traffic stop, and if either of us is asked if we have any firearms, my answer will be yes and inform the officer where it is.

We do more than a NICS check. Ohio's process requires on hell of a background check that's a pain in the ass if you've moved more than a couple times in the previous 10 (yes, I said TEN) years, plus a mandatory number of class hours, etc. As a result, the state doesn't tend to recognize licenses from places where it's easy to get them . You may not carry in a vehicle at all unless you have a concealed carry license. So long as you're legally allowed to have the firearm in your possession (you're not a felon, and it's not an SBR without a stamp), you can have a loaded gun with you in your hotel room (just not concealed on your person if you don't have a CHL).

The only real hangups with Ohio law are transporting firearms in a vehicle. Open carry is technically legal (but not in a vehicle without a CHL), but very much not recommended, unless you like being harassed by police officers. If you don't have a CHL, no loaded magazines in the car, regardless of whether they're in your trunk or in your pocket, and no loaded rifle mags regardless of CHL.

IANAL, so I recommend checking the Ohio Revised Code if you're truly concerned. This is my understanding of things as-is, but it's worth what you paid for it .

I sent an e-mail to the Ohio AGs office this morning. I just got off the phone with them. Yes they called me. He said that its because of the background check. we don't do fed. only state, therfore Texas won't sign .

So, to summarize, before crossing the border into Ohio, I disarm, place the firearm in a locked box in the back of the pickup, magazines removed, magazines unloaded, and all in separate boxes. However, once in Ohio, it would be legal for me to keep a loaded firearm in the hotel room only, then separate everything again since I won't leave it in the hotel.

OK, now the next question. May I assume that an assisted opening knife like my Kershaw is OK to carry in my pocket.

I hope so because I carry one every day

Like most anyplace else, just put the thing away out of ready reach unloaded and have a nice day

In the event of a traffic stop,
Plan on breaking traffic laws to draw attention to yourself ? I WILL tell you that if you plan on traveling I-70 from Indiana and carry on into Ohio, them next 10 mile in Ohio (BIG TIME), and then carry on another 23 mile to I-75 interchange (less problematic), OSP loves out of state cars and trucks that even look suspicious, follow close, exterior lighting malfunctions, no turn signal lane change, speed,, they have a major field day there busting big dope loads being brought in. Indiana is a hotbed there close to Ohio on I-70 too,,, OSP Post is south there at EXIT 10 and next to interstate at Exit 26

and if either of us is asked if we have any firearms, my answer will be yes and inform the officer where it is.
BE polite with OSP..
