THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT The flier I am posting pretty much sums it all up. The steel targets range from 15 to 80 yards. All shots are off hand and you must be touching the "Toe" stake when each shot is fired. One shot per target. You score each target as a hit or miss on your score card. This shoot is honor scoring. This year I added another 10 targets for a total of 40 shots per round. One of the targets is a free hanging chain. I also made a target that is 6" wide but only 1 1/4" tall......that one will be a real bummer for those who don't know the elevation of their bullet at the distance we put it. . Most of the targets are animal shapes, but I made some basic geometric shapes as well because they were a lot easier to make. Still fun as heck.
The targets are staged along a wooded trail. All of them are in the woods so when the leaves are full, many of them can be in very shaded areas. If you are shooting open target sights you better bring the biggest apertures you own!!!!! Practically none of the stages can be shot from the same stance. Some of the targets put you off balance to get your sights on target. We shoot 4 divisions. Scoped pistol and rifle and open sight pistol and rifle. All divisions shoot the same targets. This means some very tough shooting for the pistol guys. Last year we had some good scores for scoped pistol, but the average was 15 out of 30 targets. The open sight pistol guys shoot 10 or 12 out of 30. Very tough shooting. I really hope we get lots of shooters out for this event. It is so freakin much fun it should be illegal. Everyone who shoots it on a regular basis keeps coming back for more and raving about how much they enjoyed it.

Any age restrictions? I was thinking of bringing the boy (age 9) along one of these times and walking the course with him and letting him shoot. Would it be a problem? I think it would be a good learning experience.

You may want to carry the firearm from station to station if he is forgetful of his muzzle discipline. You will know him well enough to know how to keep him and others safe. I would love to see more kids with responsible parents to come and shoot. The difficulty level is pretty high, but there will be plenty of close in targets. I am sure he will have fun. |

I completely understand the safety issue, no problem there. Anytime he gets to shoot he's having fun. Much like his father, hitting the target is just a side effect

That "ping" of lead on steel is just so darn satisfying! I bet he smiles a mile wide when he nails his first target. |

Less than two weeks. Everything is done. I shot several of the new targets to test them. They ring really nicely. I'll be setting up the day before.

Most of the targets are plain sight. A few you have to really look for. Each one has a streamer close enough to it that if you see the streamer you can find the target. Plenty of easy targets to trip up the good shooters. We all know when you are working on a really great score shooting your favorite pistol and you blow the huge targets and hit the tiny ones.
I am pretty sore so I don't know how I'll do. I can't wait to shoot tomorrow. I just hope someone shows up! |

Well, I stunk up the course with my scoped marlin 25n.
31/40...... Jitters I guess. Yanking the trigger is a bad thing.
My GF did great for a new shooter with my tech sighted 10/22. 19/30. She has no idea yet how good that is for a newbie. |

Good to hear, my boys and I will try to hit the one in June. [/quote] You should do this. My boy's and I had an absolute blast shooting that course this morning and we plan on getting a bigger group together for the next one. Adam, again thanks for the invite and it was nice meeting you in person and I will see you at the next shoot. |

We had 30 shooters in the scoped rifle division. 17 in open sight rifle. 10 in scoped pistol. 4 in open sight pistol. The best score in scoped rifle was 37/40. I shot 34/40 with my tech sighted 10/22 to win the open sight division. The top shooter in scoped rifle won $37.
This was a great turn out. I have no doubt the next one will be even bigger. Almost every shooter raved about how much they enjoyed the shoot. Most promised to return with friends and family. We had such a great turn out that I could do a B class for the scoped rifle and open sight rifle. There are a few shooters who won't be expecting anything who will win a little money. I only calculate it if the number of shooters is over 10. Thank you very much to those who showed up. I already sent out the scores. I can't wait for next month to roll around! |
