I recently got selected for promotion and the position I am seeking is in Los Alamitos. I am looking for information the area, things to do, places to at, where to avoid, etc.

Anybody know the area? I will travel there one week-end a month.

Pretty decent area, tons of stuff to do.

Los Alamitos is a suburban "bedroom" community.  It is a decent area, a family area.  It's not the best but far from the worst and far from being bad.

It has some light industry, the Los Alamitos Race Track and the National Guard air base.  It's got easy access to the Freeways.

It is close to Knott's Berry Farm, Disneyland,... all the usual Los Angeles Basin attractions.

That's where my job will be. I presume SNA is the best airport to fly into?  I'll be down there once a month.

If you're interested in such things, there is quite a bit of gun competitions in the area. Although we in Ca. are about to take it in the shorts with mandatory 10 rd mags.

SNA is close but Long Beach Airport is good too.

If SNA is John Wayne Airport, then yes, it's good.  Long Beach Airport is also right there, so if they have a flight, that would be even better.

Fly into Long Beach if you can. The traffic alone will be worth it. SNA is nice, but getting to Los Al will take twice as long if not longer.

I've been on the facility at night and it's close enough to Disneyland that you can watch the fireworks from the patio behind the bar/dining room/housing area.

One thing I found interesting in the times I've been there is that California's state militia trains there and the MPs from the militia do MP duty there sometimes.  You can tell them apart because their branch tapes say "California" instead of "U.S. Army".

For whatever reason, LGB is substantially more than SNA, like double to triple the price.

Long Beach has fewer flights. Check the connections thru Phoenix - might be cheaper.

For where I'm coming from, it has to be either SLC or SeaTac.

LAX is only about 18 miles further away than Long Beach although it might seem like hours on the freeways.  OK, it may be hours on the freeway.  Sunday evenings back from Los Al to LAX probably won't be too bad.  Los Al is almost on the border between LA and Orange County.  Right next to Seal Beach.  The downtown area by the pier is nice, laidback, not the big rowdy party area that Huntington Beach is.  HB is just maybe 10 minutes down the road from SB.  Lots of nice eating places.

Not quite as nice as weekend duties in San Diego, but a hell of a lot nicer than a lot of places you might drill at.

If LGB is too pricey fly into SNA. Much easier to get in and out of and closer than LAX.

For food:

Fish company is good
Blakes place for BBQ
Chi Fil'a, In and out and a variety of others are just west of the base.
Coconut Rabbit for Thai
Lots of places on main street in Seal Beach for food drinks.

Lots of things to do, but it all depends on your interests.

Feel free to IM If you want more detail.

Los Al is a good area, as everyone else said above, tons of stuff to do and close to all major attractions. Sucks that Long Beach airport is double the price, it is so much closer and easy to get in and out.

there is even the Hawaiian gardens casino near by if thats your thing. not a nice area but the casino is decent

SNA is 17 miles from Los Al and LGB is 9 miles. I'm not going to pay nearly double to get 8 miles closer.

I get reimbursed for travel expenses up to a max of $300.

In general I agree with your position but I've lived in Long Beach (Spring/Bellflower) and know that particular 8 miles can be pure hell.

In all likelihood, I'll try both, just to get a feel for the area since I'll be coming down every month for the next few years.

When dealing with LA traffic & airports around the South Bay/Long Beach it's all about timing your flights to minimize traffic issues.  With the max $300 travel expense you probably want to look hard at LAX flights - they should be cheaper given the volume of flights everyday.

I have been warned more than a few time to avoid LAX. When I last looked up a flight from FCA to SNA it was $265 round trip. It's more now due to the closeness of the dates and I would likely book a few months out.

43 miles from ONT to Los Alamitos.  27 miles from LAX to Los Alamitos.  Either could be a piece of cake or a total nightmare depending on the whims of the traffic gods.

I'm pretty much only considering LGB (9 mi) and SNA (17 mi).

SoCal does not need me on your public highways any longer than absolutely necessary.

Neither does my stress level.

You're honestly looking at close to an hour's worth of drive time difference between those two depending on when you fly in.

Which one being the better one?

I would most likely be looking at arrival times of between 8-10pm the day before duty (thur or Fri) and departing socal 6-7pm on Sun.

It shouldn't be too bad, in that case.  Even driving from Ontario (which agree on being the best choice in the region) shouldn't be too bad.  I used to drive from the area near Ontario to Los Alamitos for work around that time sometimes (usually earlier, where I indeed caught some traffic), and I didn't usually have a hard time, barring holiday weekends or something like that.

Rough estimates follow, which can vary dramatically because of traffic.  Traffic varies with time of day, weather and accidents on the freeways (and local streets).  The following numbers can easily double (rush hour, rain, accidents).

LAX to Los Alamitos - 1 hour minimum

Long Beach to Los Alamitos  - 15 minutes

John Wayne to Los Alamitos - 30 minutes

LAX to Los Alamitos does not take 1 hour min under "normal" circumstances after 8pm on a Thurs or Fri night.  On a Sunday evening the drive from Los Alamitos to LAX should be 30 min.

I worked at 405/Crenshaw for over 5 years and lived in Long Beach for 3 of those years.  I still spend enough time in the South Bay/Long Beach to know how traffic flows (or doesn't ) on the 405 - I was there last week.

Wow!  What time of day are you basing this commute time on?
I live one mile south of John Wayne (SNA) airport and commute daily to Burbank.  Generally I take the 405 north to the 605 which is where the Joint Forces Training base is located.  Average time for me to get to Los Alamitos is 20 minutes when I'm in my 4x4.  That does not vary much in the morning, evening drive time might be a bit longer but not much.

One night (~9:30 PM), it took over 30 minutes to get out of the LAX loop and onto Sepulveda Blvd.  The on ramp to the 105 was jammed up.  I was glad I was just going south on Sepulveda.

I've spent up to an hour stuck (not drive time, sitting time) between exits on the 405 southbound.

If you need to be in Los Alamitos at a particular time and you are flying into LAX, better leave at least an hour to drive it.  It could be more, maybe much more.  It is unlikely to be significantly less.

Consider the time spent getting from the terminal to your rental car, then to get to the freeway and the time after leaving the freeway to get to your final destination.

If the guy wants to know what to expect to get from terminal to door, or rental agency exit to final destination,...

This is one time when saying, "Your mileage may vary" truly does fit.    YMMV

I'm willing to pay $100.00 more for a ticket to not fly out of LAX.  Unfortunately clients will inevitably book me out of LAX, so they then get dinged with parking and milage costs that equal or exceed the increased ticket price.

My first trip down is in Mar and I selected SNA, we'll see how it goes.

Would different airports based on the time of the year (Spring or Summer) make any sense?

With your travel times you should not be impacted too badly by traffic assuming no accidents or special issues.

Long Beach will be faster/easier in and out than any other airport but you need to balance the cost. Jet Blue and southwest frequently run deals as well.

If there is the slightest possibility of rain when you'll be on SoCal freeways you want to fly into Long Beach - SoCal drivers are f'ing retarded if there is any moisture on the road.

Rainy season?  What's that?

Last week and apparently Monday.  Last two years we really didn't have one.

Time to get in and out of LAX will suck until they get the (to this point) peaceful protestors out of the traffic lanes.

Although if you are taking a shuttle to/from a rental car lot, some other poor sucker gets to deal with some of the worst traffic.

Although one time coming back from a funeral, the Lot C (Long Term) Shuttle driver couldn't get back in to Lot C.  They were working on a driveway for another lot and he apparently missed the temporary turn..  Some of the passengers were getting really pissed, the driver was about to blow, and then some joker in the back kept yelling, "Hey, there's my car again."   Most people found that quite amusing.  We kept driving past exits, but with the one way and long block streets where he got us to, he didn' want to experiment to aggressively trying to get back to the front of the lot.
