[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Calguns.net is down for this long?

Does anyone know why? It's usually a very reliable website and it is my other daily website besides AR15.com

ETA: how can a major website be down this long?

CG is my first love, sorry ARF, so I have been wondering WTF is going on as I have been trying for 2 days to access it as I am on it all day long and then pooff..... dead. Thanks for the link to the "Calguns.org" forums as I never use those.

I'm the opposite.

I prefer ARF over CG for several reasons. Chief among them is the rabidly pro-LEO stance of the site owner and most of the moderators. They often swash, censor, lock, or delete many threads & posts about bad acts by cops.

Its really pathetic IMHO.

I doubt it. Since they are saying it's the hosting service, Geovario, that's down it looks like Calguns itself is not the problem. As long as there are backups of all the files and content things should be back to normal once the hosting service fixes their problem.

I made a commitment to purchase an upper and scope package and was trying to make arrangements to meet FTF. Seller gave me his phone #, but I didn't have a chance to put the number into my phone and then poof

Hopefully, Seller is aware of server situation and not hold it against me.

BTW, I have 75 + feedback on CG

Update about the hosting service: http://www.professionaledgellc.com/

UPDATES: 4:00am PST 11/26/2016 - integrity checks finished - which ended up producing more questions as to how we arrived where we are; in short we have unusable backups, lots of filesystem corruption, and now sets of servers that even though they can now access working hardware refused to run at speeds faster than a computer from the late 1960s . As we have already been planning the next phase of our services to be built using Amazon AWS Cloud Servers, we have spun up several servers there and are moving critical services there as quickly as possible. We hate to say it - but you likely won't have your website back in the next 2 hours - unless you already have your site back now. Next update will be at 12 noon PST.

Personally, I think ARFCOM GD is a lot better.
And from the sounds of it here, the top reason why folks like CGN is due to the Marketplace.

I love Calguns, and I love Arfcom. Calguns is better for me for the EE when it comes to actual guns, since many of the Calguns deals are local and we can meet at a FFL.

It is my opinion that CGN needs to be relocated to a top tier hosting provider which can guarantee five nines reliability. For such a heavily utilized site with many paying vendors onboard, CGN needs to be utterly reliable. The fact that there for years has been a separate .org site for the express purpose of supporting downtime of the main site is a red flag that the main site's hosting provider is no longer up to the task.

CGN, you have grown way beyond a hobby site and your long time hosting provider has not grown with you. It's time to move on.

But since CGN is actually privately owned by Mr. Kestryll, so I'm sure he is only looking at the bottom line. The cost is just a small factor in the scheme of things... I'd check the contract for an "uptime" clause.

A firmware update got overlooked which resulted in no S.M.A.R.T. warning from the server of the impending hard drive failure(s). Then a comedy of errors proceeded from there. I'd bet the controller is ultimately at fault and one or more of the drives are still fine, but I've only been in IT for 20+ years!

I'm beginning to wonder if the server is hosted in someone's Mother's basement. Pretty unprofessional to have a server down this long, and I hope lessons are learned here!

I think you hit the nail on the head. If it were my business, I'd get the best. But, I don't think the owner sees it as a business.
