If the price of desalination made economic sense Californians would be doing it.
on the environmentalist doing jack or shit. In the Inland Empire a developer wanted to put in a 41 million square foot warehouse development - approved. The bullet train to nowhere - approved. Highway expansions - approved.
The real bitch with desalination is the cost. Pumping millions and millions of gallons of water doesn't come cheap. Nor does the construction of the plant - all to prepare for a once in five hundred to a thousand year drought? Capitalism is a bitch. Californians are liberal but they are the best capitalist and inventors in the nation and possibly the universe. Isreal does it only because they have no choice.
Reclamation is a far cheaper solution - so is catching more of the water that falls on the state. But the federal government restricts what the state is allowed to do heavily. I would argue that without the interference of the federal courts we'd be in far far better shape. The jealously and hatred seen on this forum for the state carries on into the courts it appears! There's a new voter initiative to seize the bullet-train-to-nowhere funds and mandate they be used for water resources instead attempting to get put on the ballot.
