I came for a career opportunity but it's not going to happen.  I got most of what I wanted out of the experience so it's not a loss, but I have no future here.  That is no future except higher cost of living, lower real income, ever increasing commute time and more liberal insanity. It's a shame too because there is a lot to like in CA.

Now I just need a job somewhere else and a buyer for my house.

Anyone interested in a house?

Tens of millions of liberal idiots from all over the Nation flocked to California in the post-WWII era.  They have made the same mess of this Nirvana they sought to escape in their former home States.  The places they left have worsened in their absence (Detroit, New York,...).

First the companies leave.  Now, the idiots are leaving and this place will suffer the same fate as Detroit, New York, ...

What now?  Repeat the cycle somewhere else like Austin or Phoenix or wherever?  Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

Again, it's all in perspective....if you can't get past what you don't like about a place and focus on what it has to offer then maybe you should gtfo.

Every area has it pro's and cons, CA has a lot to offer if you like what it presents. SC, NV, CO, NY etc...have a lot to offer if you like what is being presented their.

One simple example, if your life revolves around guns and fending off zombies, CA is not the place.   If you life revolves around the beach life, there is no better state.

Again, figure out what things/experiences give you the most out of life and go to where you can do those things.

The people will keep coming here, unlike Detroit/NY, because we will have $15 min wage, and nicer weather.
All those out of state people keep talking about is how nice the weather is here.

Hmm imagine $15 min wage in Detroit? People would flock back and buy up houses for CHEAP and live like a king.
Hmmm maybe the crime rate would go down .....nahhh probably not.

I'm a native born Californian who got out last month and I could not be happier about my decision.

I save over $800 a month in health insurance, don't have to deal with absurdly hot weather when it should be fall, lowered my rent significantly to live in a nicer place with a great view, and can buy good guns and stuff. I just started the wait for a silencer. It's awesome.

California sucks. The crime is ridiculous. The government is actively out to get you. The weather sucks, unless dry and hot all the time is your idea of good weather. The beaches are ok, but they suck compared to pretty much anywhere else that's warm and has beaches.

And every year Sacramento outdoes themselves with idiotic legislation. Prop 47, new gun laws, it's absurd.

Don't even get me started on the gun laws, especially the recent-ish revision of section 12020. As a law enforcement officer you would think I know them right? Nope. They are so stupid, convoluted, poorly written, and overlapping that neither I nor anyone I worked with could actually summarize them for you. Basically if a gun crime was committed a penal code was thumbed through until the appropriate section was discovered.

I hope all the good people leave until there is nothing left buy a state filled with criminals and the oblivious numbskulls who keep voting said criminals into office. They thoroughly deserve one another.

Consider yourself lucky OP, you're apparently not seemingly trapped here. Some of us are here because you just can't have much of a career in what I do outside this hell hole. On the flipside, it's really what you make of it and apart from our catastrophe of a state system of governance (dominated by ballot measures with officials with no actual power but unending mandates) it's actually a pretty great place and I bet OP knows that.

I found a great town that's full of conservatism on the edge of the sea of liberalism. The commute has only gotten better in the last 10 years and promises to continue doing so. My home value keeps going up and due to the massive cost of living the paychecks are commensurate (as long as you're in a professional career path) so your enormously expensive house simply acts as a brilliant savings account. I can't think too many people in their right mind really want to retire here but it's great to spend your professional life in if you happen to be one. If you're not in a sklilled trade or white collar professional career then the financial situation is in fact boned and it's anything from difficult to impossible to escape the cycle of living paycheck to paycheck.

People leaving should definitely not consider themselves to have wasted time or have been beaten down. The state is not here to deliver any person success or happiness. It has historically been the place where people go to chase an impossible dream that seems totally attainable before you get here and find out that it is possible but not if you do it the way you had originally planned. If you want to succeed in a gold rush, don't mine gold. Mine the miners.

A few years ago they did away with PC 12020 which listed prohibited weapons and offenses relating to the carry and use thereof. 12020 was apparently too simple and easy for citizens without a law degree to understand. They replaced it with a shitload of convoluted laws in the 20000s section of the penal code.

Basically the same stuff is illegal, but every possible illegal act with a gun you can think of now has a different law attached to it. For example there are now about 10 different sections for illegally discharging a gun.

It's just straight up dumb, even by the standards of Jerry Brown and his regime.

My perception says the politics of this State derive from the Legislature.  In fact, it is driven by a non-elected, socialist Democratic party in the proverbial "smoke-filled back room", not by the ballot box and not by this Governor's office.

Where in CA did you live/work?  It's been hot here in Sonoma County but I can't say the weather "sucks".  And the crime isn't ridiculous where I live. Certainly there are parts of CA that meet both of those criteria but every state has areas that meet those criteria.

Agreed that Sacramento = idiotic legislation.  CA isn't alone when it comes to having idiotic legislation though - Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Washington, Oregon all come to mind.

I'm thinking more Texas than Nevada, but Nevada isn't off the list.  Illinois, NY, Mass, Maryland, etc... Are off the list.

It'll take a while to find a suitable job with a very strict geographical target but in the meantime I can still enjoy the California recreational opportunities.

I spent one year making arrangements to leave California for Idaho.  It was the best decision I've ever made, apart from joining the Marine Corps.  People here are polite and friendly.  They drive slow, but they're still friendly.

When I applied for my Concealed Weapons License, nobody asked me why I wanted it.  Every gun store here has a mini-wall of 30 round magazines.  The handgun selection is insane.  Freedom is everywhere.  And most of the neighborhoods are quite nice.

I, too, am planning to leave L.A.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, I've seen continuous degradation
of civility, and quality of life.

32 months is all I need.

Nevada is my #1 choice, zero state income taxes is what attracts
me most, along with more freedom and better property values.

I'm 100% Conservative, so I'm sure I will pass the "Test".

#2 on my list is Arizona, State income taxes are half what they would be in
Kalifornia and yes, more freedom is just the icing on the cake.

Way too many immigrants with no sense of Patriotism or Americanism
flooding in, in uncontrolled numbers and they crimes they commit is my #2
reason for leaving.

Feel like I'm living in Ft. Apache.

EDIT TO ADD: Found back gate tampered with, I guess the burglars are trying to get back
in, and get more...(Nov. 16th, 2015)

Now I feel like they'll keep trying until they get in and clean me out. Need to GTFO
ASAP now!

To O.P.:

Good luck to you while you're still here and also when you decide to bug out.

We are scheduled to leave California, for Idaho, June of next year.  My next-door neighbor left a few months ago for the same area we are going to in Idaho.  When he came back for a quick visit last month, he couldn't wait to get out of here.  If you are on the fence about leaving, go visit another state that treats you like an adult, and where people believe like you.  You will be shocked how much BS you put up with here, that you don't even realize.

For the places I will miss, like the Eastern Sierra region, and extreme NE California, I can always come back and visit.

Probably not.  But, the Eastern Sierra, Owens Valley, Death Valley areas hold a special place in my soul.  It's where I really learned to hunt, where I explored for most of my life, and where I discovered places and things that very few people on this earth have seen.  I married my wife up there, and my dog's name is "Bodie" (like the ghost town).  It's pretty ingrained within me, so visits back to the area won't stop.

However, I am looking forward to exploring everything from the Boise area (where we plan to live), all the way up to the Canadian border, so I may run out of time at some point!!

Thankfully California is the only known place with people you label as hipsters and hippies based on their appearances. Other states have the sense to mandate dress codes apparently.  I hate it when there are people who look differently than I do. Hate it.

Just to be clear. If you're judging a person on their appearance you're foolish. In the few minutes it took you to walk past the person in the airport if you had a conversation about their convictions, their stance on deep moral issues facing our nation, validated their place of residence, and other things to give you an honest look at their character then judge on. If on the other hand you saw someone dressed smartly or sharp and dismissed them as a hipster or someone in a tee-shirt and sandals and labeled them as a hippy they likely looked at you with your out-of-style haircut, sloppy clothes, big belt buckle and cowboy boots and labeled you as a bigoted, inbred, redneck or an urban cowboy pretender.

Thankfully in Idaho (Tenth Best State for Hippies) everyone dresses the same.

The listing put Idaho #10 on the list and California #32 next to that famous hippy haven of South Dakota.

1. I have yet to meet a hippie/hipster that had conservative values.

2. I shaved my head.

3. I wore a polo shirt with jeans and black shoes, all very clean.

4. I wore a casual dress belt.

5. Any list saying Idaho is better for hippies than California is worthless.

This was interesting to me and your use of quotation marks was intriguing.  I did a web search and found a list and article.  California was listed as #1 and Idaho was #7.  Both are pretty bad.

Arguing about judging people by their appearances entirely misses the mark.

How much you make misses the mark, too.  It's not what you make, it's what you keep AND your cost of living (housing, food, energy,...).

There are other soft, human factors, too, such as having other close family members living in California with whom you have ties.

For me, I came to California for work, found suitable employment and stayed.  One troubling thing for me was, that in all those decades of voting, almost none of the candidates I voted for were ever elected to office.  Furthermore, I don't think I could disagree more with many/most/all of the legislative work done in Sacramento YET, I have to pay for it.  That is wrong.  It is especially wrong when those legislative efforts are driving business and employment out of the State (which was why I came).

Don't you guys kid yourselves, California s a great place to live and work. If I had not spent my career in California I could not have retired as well as I did here in Arizona. Job for job, people don't make nearly the same here as there. I miss the beaches dearly and although I live in what I consider the best place in Arizona, (Prescott) I find myself visiting California frequently.

IF ever you guys could do it, changing the senate back to one senator per county would make an excellent start. Don't give up.
