Is it legal to install a VFG on a registered pre-ban AK or AR15 rifle. Tried googlng it but they only talk about pistols. I was told that it is not legal but can not find any confirmation one way or the other.

only if already lawfully registered, but you probably know that.

If the rifle is a RAW (Registered Assault Weapon) then adding a VFG is Legal.

In fact, other then maintaining a barrel length of at least 16 inches and overall firearm length of 26 inches, just about everything else is GTG on a RAW.
- Folding or collapsible stock
- Pistol Grip
- Bayonet Lug
- Flash Hider or Muzzle Brake

IIRC, with a 16" barrel any GI receiver will get you past the 26" limit. Certainly the 16" barrel, GI receiver plus buffer tube will get you well past 26".
