I believe that to have a safe society that people need to have the ability for self defense. Unless you're a Hollywood multi-millionaire celebrity with private armed guards or a politician with an armed taxpayer paid for police escort there is far too much time between when evil and good arrives. You must be ready at all times for the arrival of evil. So that means hiring a private guard, getting a police escort, or having your own firearm ready.
We can debate the causes of evil until the cows come home, we eventually might come to an agreement but what we'll never come to is a solution on how to completely eliminate evil.
The government's police are there in the famous "thin blue line" to keep evil at bay. The police do a tough job but most of the time they're not where evil is at at the right time. Evil knowing that there are patrols seeks very actively to avoid the armed police and seek out the weak and unarmed. Evil never fights a fair fight. Whether they're murderers, robbers, rapist, or blowing-up-preschools terrorist they always will seek out a target that is weak. If more "citizens" were allowed their Constitutional right to keep and bear arms evil would have far far fewer victims to take advantage of. Most of the time the police are there to take up the evidence of the murder, the robbery, the rape, or the terrorist attack. Nobody can argue that an armed society wouldn't have fewer murders, robberies, rapes and come the next terrorist attack wouldn't it be nice to have a even just a handful of trained teachers armed when the terrorist attempt to take over a school?
I think that the best way to support our cops is to put more guns into more hands of law abiding citizens. Having a "shall issue" concealed carry law means that unless the government can actively show why you should not have the natural right to protect yourself you shall be allowed to exercise it. Having work the other way is straight out bull shit crazy. No lawful person has to ask for a God-given right.

From the US Constitution as amended: "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

"All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."
The Tenth Amendment prohibits the states from usurping the rights of the people - if suddenly California was quartering soldiers in citizens households during a time of peace without the consent of the owner does anyone think that the federal government would step-in and prohibit that like they do the banning of gay marriage, the closing of the border with Mexico, the attempt to restrict welfare from the non-US citizens, or attempting to make people show ID when they vote? The American citizens in Texas have different Second Amendment rights than the people in California and that's unConstitutional.
The Fourteenth Amendment acknowledges Jefferson's "all men are created equal" from the Declaration of Independence prohibiting the government from creating different classes of people to whom different laws apply. Cut us open and we're all American citizens. And yet the state of California has established different classes of citizens and has restricted/prohibited their God-given natural rights. How can there be equal protection under the law when the very law itself sets up the inequality?
And the Second Amendment needs no explanation here ... I would hope.
Our government has broken the chains that were meant to restrict it. Everyday we lose freedom, liberty, and our rights.
