THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT I heard in California if you are lucky enough to own an "Assault Weapon" you must have a fixed magazine? Is this true and if so can you expand on that? What brought this up was curiosity of how they run 3 gun competitions and what not. |

Registered AW's in CA do not have to have a fixed magazine.
Postban firearms that would otherwise meet the definition of AW according to their statute (which is different than the expired federal ban) are often made compliant by modifying the magazine catch so that a tool is required to remove the magazine. Or they can have a standard magazine setup by removing the other named features. |

An assault weapon does not require a fixed magazine.
The rifles specifically modified with fixed magazines are to prevent them from being classified as unregistered assault weapons (the registration period for them has long passed, so unless you're looking to start stacking up the felony charges, you build them specifically as non-assault weapons); registered assault weapons are fine to run with detachable magazines, and lawfully possessed large capacity magazines. |
