Surprise!!

It looks like Sarasota City Manager Thomas Barwin was previously the village manager in Oak Park, Illinois and was sued by the NRA.

"The USSC struck down his restrictions on handguns.  Oak Park and Chicago fought the NRA in court, ultimately losing".

So this guy is now the city mgr in Sarasota?! I go there often, which is about 20mins form me. I had not idea that POS was now the city mgr there.

He, as mgr of the city of Sarasota, is holding a vote to send a plan to congress for an AWB, which doesn't seem to have any teeth at all.  The LGS there told me he plans to speak there at 6pm, and would like any and all support he could get in attendance, but the newspaper is saying the vote is at 230pm in the city office.

If this does involve a 6pm showing of support, please show up if you can. I plan to call the LGS and get an update on what, if any, support can be shown today, before the vote (at 230pm?).

Otherwise, email the gun grabbing city council/staff before 230pm.

The City of  Sarasota is NOT voting on any sort of weapons ban today, but rather, only  a bullshit resolution calling on Congress to enact a ban, so the thread title is very misleading.

It's all a publicity stunt so why give them fuel for their fire?

And this thread is a dupe.

I was aware this isn't any legal or binding ruling from Sarasota, but just gun grabbers setting a stage for their socialist activities.

IMO it's still a good idea to show up, look them in the eye, and present a pro-gun message, if possible. It looks like it all took place at 230pm, vs 6pm.

Apologies for the dupe on a pro-gun opinion...surprised I didn't see that thread over the past week.

they wanted to ban them in the city, but they got warned by the state or local attorney that they most likely would be sued due to the preemption.

The thread title is sensationalistic nonsense.

They weren't enacting any sort of ban here in Florida, they only created a "resolution" in favor of gun control that they were to forward to the US Congress.

BTW: the city voted the whole thing down, it was the brainchild of the city manager and police chief both of whom are non elected positions.

Sarasota City Commission votes down weapons ban

Isabel Mascarenas, WTSP 7:55 PM. EST June 20, 2016

UPDATE: Sarasota city commissioners voted 4-1 against taking a position on a ban against assault weapons.

Only City Commissioner Suzanne Atwell was in favor, saying the ban .

The vote follows the advice of the city attorney.

Twenty-six people spoke at the meeting, with 17 in favor of the ban and 9 against.

10News WTSP was first to bring you this story.

Previous story:

A full house is expected Monday night at city hall representing both sides of the issue. But a letter from the city attorney obtained by 10News to city commissioners advises against any action saying it’s not the worth risk of a lawsuit.

The "Safe Communities Initiative" asks state and federal officials to stop the mass killings by limiting who can own a military-grade, high-capacity magazine assault weapon.

In a letter to commissioners, City Attorney Robert Fournier says the resolution—even though it isn’t an ordinance—pre-empts state action and if “a person or an organization alleged its members were adversely impacted could file suit."

Fournier say the City would be used as a quote “guinea pig” and adds, ”it is my opinion that the benefit to be derived from adopting the Resolution is not worth the risk.”

City Manager Tom Barwin is proposing the resolution and has a different opinion. “The chief and I have come to the conclusion there is no role in our community for these military gauge rifles. They are weapons of war they have no place in our streets or in our communities or with civilians.”

If the City passes the resolution and is sued and loses, the city attorney says commissioners could be fined $5,000 and even be removed from office. Fournier advises commissioners if the goal is to make the city safer, then hire more police officers.

Appropriate emails to the City Attorney shut them up. They should return compensation received for time used to consider this matter which was clearly personal and outside the duties and functions of their office. Generally, they should be arrested and charged with grand theft every time that they cash a payroll check.

It sounds like we fucked up. It. Should have been 17 speakers in favor of the ban and 87,000 against.

Its just a bunch of sensationalized nonsense anyway, right. Follow Americafirst's lead and stay home, keep your head in the sand, call it a dupe, etc. and let the socialist anti-gun liberals speak for you.

We didn't  need to show up en masse at their insignificant donkey show and turn it into a newsworthy "event" for them   by giving it the exposure and inertia they were seeking.

Regardless of the sensationalistic thread title, there was never any chance at all of the City Council of Sarasota enacting any sort of a ban, and and neither should we jump at every piece of bait they troll us with..

Never give your enemies what they want and what they wanted in the instance, was a "debate" on gun control when, in fact, due to state preemption; there is no debate at their level and they knew it going in..

Take your /sarcasm to GD where it belongs; men discuss things here.

I disagree. My experiences have led to the development of a personal sense of urgency anytime gun rights are being discussed, be it in Tallahassee, or D.C., etc.

If its going on in my own backyard, its time to show support anyway I can, by speaking or by showing support through attendance "en masse" if possible.  In case you haven't noticed, pro-gun websites and social media are great for organizing that sort of activity and awareness...this is what the enemy does btw.

Also, there was no debate on guns and there never is. No, they don't want a debate; its their way or nothing. Its up to freedom and action-oriented men and women to respond in kind, vs  "oh, its insignificant anyway, let the gun grabbers be the ones who show-up en masse" even though its in a public/government forum, with media coverage, and they speak their minds against freedoms and personal protection.  THIS is what the enemy wants; your silence and complacency.

Standing against the socialists and anti-gun fascists, with personal time, money, and words, etc is where the men do the talking, not on arf, in GD, or even here in this thread.

eta I  have much more respect for the fascist anti-gun people who take action and are "on-scene" than I do for the complacent "self-professed" pro-gun men who argue against their own supporters.
