This does not effect the detector at all. I always put tape around battery compartment to make sure it stays dry if it rains. You can see by the coil that it was dragged very little on the ground and is very clean. I used it for relic hunting. The only reason I'm selling is that I just bought a Tesoro Sand Tiger Detector for under water use and I can use it for relic hunting. It won't be as accurate as the Cortes though.
