I have many AR's, but I'd really like a non-AR 5.56.  I love my PTR91, and thought a 5.56 HK type weapon would fit my bill nicely.  I feel like the options are very limited, however.  A true HK is going to run me WAY too much for just another rifle in the collection, and I am very leery of a CA C93 POS.  My first thought is to get a nice MKE 12.5" pistol, apply for a stamp, and convert it to a SBR with HK style collapsible stock... .  Of course this would take forever, and then I'd be saddled with a ultra short 5.56, which I'm not as keen on.

So a few questions for you smart guys:

1.) If I do SBR an MKE, do I still have to worry about 922r bullshit?
2.) Is there a builder out there that already does MKE conversions?
2.) Are there any other reputable builders out there that make nice 5.56 HK style weapons?

I'd like my budget to be sub $2000 if feasible.  Much past that and it just isn't worth it to me...

TIA,

- AG

Sub 2k for a 93. Hell an HK93 just sold on HK pro for $2300 and it was a real cream puff. I purchased my C93 a few years age and have had nothing but a "blast" with it. I installed one of my Fleming sears and the correct BC, and she runs perfect. Not saying all C93's are great but mine shoots fine ...Good luck.

So, I know you said you aren't into short 5.56, but my most recent HK "project" was a Vector 53 (9" barrel 5.56) for $1100. Jeff Walters did his magic to it, and for sub-$2000 I have a HK53 clone.

Because you want the longer barrel HK33 style, you may have an easier time finding a kit for someone (like Jeff) to build you. However, their labor added to parts cost, I think will put you above $2000.

Regardless, I recommend talking to Jeff Walters at Parabellum Combat Systems about what your end-goal is and budget, and he can help point you in the right direction.

Answers:

1) Yes, 922(R) does apply.  Especially since you are the "maker" (filing the form 1).

2) I don't know of anyone that has converted MKE rifles in stock.

3) You might want to go to HK Pro.  There is a lot of roller locked information there.  I believe there are a couple builders that convert the receiver for use with AR mags.  Special Weapons made some SW53 AR or SW93 AR receivers.  I had my 53Ks, 53s and 33Ks built with those receivers.

Something to consider is the Coharie Arms CA53 AR.  I noticed one for sale on GB a couple of weeks ago for $1,650 I think.  Good luck with your search.

Thanks for the info so far...

I'm seeing some Vector Arms V93 guns on gunbroker in my price range.  What is the reputation of the V93's?

How about a Zenith Z43P?  That would be my choice if I couldn't afford a HK 93.

Zenith/MKE has a Z43 rifle coming out in April, street price to be around $1500.  I'm planning on picking one up.

I paid $1499 plus 7% sales tax for my Z43P.  To go SBR and 922R, figure $125 for the trigger, trigger Box, sear, and hammer.  Flash suppressor is $25.  The US butt stock is around $130, and then $200 for the stamp.  This still leaves 2 more needed parts, of which I can't find right now.  MKE is supposed to be releasing some 922 parts at some point, just not sure when.

So, that brings us to $2083.93, so far.  If, the new MKE rifle will be 922 compliant, I would go that route, but for the price above, I doubt it will and will probably have to use 10 round mags.  I will be going for a HK33K clone.

The Z43 PS for all we know might not come out until the end of the year, if it even comes out at all.

I have a v-93 that is awesome to shoot, however, some of their receivers are not HK spec. It can make scope mounting difficult.

My vector 93 is awesome and has never had a single malfunction.

It's an awesome rifle.

That being said, I want a Zenith SBR so bad.......

I didn't think you could use that brace on a 5.56, only a 9mm. Is that a new model?

They now say you can.  I ordered one, and once I saw it was exactly the same as the 9mm version, I called Zenith.  They said it was redesigned from the original and will work fine.  It only has the rubber H buffer, so far, so good.  For me it's a short term solution until my papers come back.

problem is, these rifles just wont come down in price.

1400 bucks is just too damn much. I didnt pay that for my CZ805 and its a better firearm. I bought my V93 for 1200 new during the Obama days, (Did I buy that from atlantic? I think maybe I did - I dont recall) and it was US made with german guts and a new 1/9 barrel. I get the Z43 is close to an HK, but its still a Turkish made gun with cheap turk labour. They will never meet the 800-1000.00 range as long as zenith keeps them high. They are not worth more than a PTR in my opinion. I really wish PTR would make a 556 gun in the price range their 762 guns are. PTR makes a damn nice HK rifle. Bringing a 556 gun to market would make give competetion and drive down prices.

With the gun market as stagnated as it is, the only way Zenith gets away with the prices they do on these is because no one in the US is making one.
