What is the consensus on this new 10.4" HK416 barrel kit HKparts is selling? It seems like an economical (at least relative to the other options of having an MR556 barrel cut, re-profiled, and nitrided, or tracking down an actual grey market used 416 upper) turn-key solution for making HK416D10 clone out of an MR556 upper.

What's the catch?

$590 + S/H is the catch.

For $590 I'll have my barrel reprofiled.

Last time I looked into it, it seemed like it'd be about $500 to get the barrel work done, a 6-9 week turnaround, and you'd be cutting a swaged barrel.

$600 is stupid expensive for a barrel, but it seems attractive to me compared to the alternative.

Compared to a SCAR barrel this seems like a bargain!

Except with the SCAR you get OEM and, unless I'm missing something, the same barrel assemblies that the military gets.

I really want an HK416D upper, but I hate re-pros and knockoffs almost as much. I'm glad to see many of the actual German parts are becoming available (e.g., upper receivers, piston system), but the barrel seems to be the big problem. I guess these kits are a small step in the right direction.

Well, it gives you the option of having 2 uppers with different barrel lengths. Probably would be a little cheaper to build the upper with this barrel than to buy a separate complete HK upper assembly then to send it out to get chopped and have the gas port resized.

Ok but who made the barrel?

Marvin Pitts can make barrels for the MR series, but IIRC, hes only limited up to 12" barrels

Is there even any way to get a new HK barrel?

Brownells is OOS right now. $720 each. I don't know it comes ready to use.

$720 for a 16 inch stupid heavy profile barrel that is neither chrome lined or nitrided?

I think I'll pass.

Should be nitided.
IIRC, MR series HK barrels are all nitided, at least the inside/bore.

I've heard that they are nitided before being profiled.

Well I broke down and bought one.

-Edit-
Got it in today, it has what appears to be surface rust on the gas block, roll pins, and barrel extension.
