I'm thinking that later in the year I may look at buying an MP5 clone and as I do with all of my purchases, I'm trying to do a little research.

Basically I'm looking to get as close to the standard model that I can and I would like to have the polymer lower, what are my options?

I see that the MEKs have a poly lower but it has those weird contours on the side, id rather it be a slab side like the older H&Ks.

I appreciate any help, I really don't even know where to begin.

I would also like to SBR it and would very much like to keep it under $2000 with the stamp.

You will need to re-visit this when you have money in hand, as buying choices change frequently.

The standard model as shipped from HK these days has a polymer lower using one of thr ambi trigger groups. Will also have a 3-lug. SBR is best accomplished by buying a pistol version.

Aren't the HK models quite a bit more expensive than the copies?

HK no longer sells them in the US, so yes the ones sold back in the 80s do command a premium over a clone made recently. But many of the clones are very high quality with features not available in the 80s, 3-lug, flapper mag release, polymer lowers, etc. Though users have upgraded those HKs to these feature, so it is possible to find them, but they did not come that way.

You will be very hard pressed to get an MP5 SBR done for $2000 with the stamp.  Here is the break down of mine which I am waiting on the stamp to come back for now.

MKE Z-5RS Pistol:  $1675
FLL Transfer Fee:   $50
NFA Tax Stamp:     $200
922r Foregrip          $25
922r Stock               $150
922r Sear                $25
922r Hammer          $25
922r Trigger            $25
922r floorplate         $10
Poly/Ambi group:    $389

Total:  $2574

Pic as it waits for the stamp.

You can do it for less than that. There are quite a few used US made trigger packs for sale if you hunt around...they're a lot cheaper than $389, and have a number of US parts in them.  It would seem that HK fanboys don't like their German guns tainted with non-teutonic parts, so they are commonly removed and replaced.  The ambi trigger packs are not worth the premium over a SEF pack, and a 'Navy' style SEF lower is cheap, too.

The MKEs have 'pushpin' lowers, which would be good for you.  This means you don't have to do a traditional 'clip and pin' to get the grip frame to fit the lower.  You do have to hog out an area for the 'block' to poke into the front of the grip frame, but it's not visible when the gun is assembled.  Right now, on HKPro, there is a guy selling G3 plastic 'Navy' style grip frames NEW for $22 bucks.  You have to trim the metal bit on the back (easy), and you have to dremel a clearance for the 'block' (easy), and you have a $22 dollar, brand new, factory HK MP5 grip frame.  Ugly Turkish grip gone.

While you're waiting for your stamp, hunt down the parts you'll need.

You can surely do it cheaper, but sub 2000 would require waiting for deals on the second hand market for some parts or going with a POF host gun (which having held and inspected, I did not want to use). The only thing "german" on mine is the picto-housing and the trigger box.

Get the ATI stock for $133 on sale @ HKParts. If you were building this from a kit, or using a factory HK94, sure- go HK. But that ATI retractable stock works great, and saves you $200 since youre putting it on a clone anyways. More $$$ for accessories and ammo

All true,

I just liked the profile of the Hk stock better, and since they had Refurbs, I bit.  I wouldn't have paid the premium for a new Hk stock.

Yeah, but to hit the $2,000-mark that $200 price difference and a good deal on some mags, it's totally feasible to get an MP5-clone SBR for $2,000.

Indeed. Spill the beans. Best I ever got was from RTG in 2014 @ 26.95 apiece in an 8-pack.
