What would be the best way to get started with the H&K?

Long time gun owner - have paired down the armory down to 22's, 9MM and 30-06 (Garands and bolt action for deer).

I have always wanted a H&K - so what would be the best gun to get started with?  91 in 308, or 93 in 5.56, or MP5 something in 9mm or 22?

What are your thoughts?  Would I be happy with the C93? PTR91?

The best way to get started would be to pull your wallet out and empty it of all cash, and prepare to drain your bank account....

If I didn't already have a HK collection- and I wanted to shoot a lot of .308 I would get a PTR. If I wanted a PURE HK, I would buy a 91. HK91 is twice as much as a PTR, so provenance is something to think about. Having HK stamped into it, worth paying $2,xxx ? Or is shooting a US-made copy for $1,xxx going to give you the same thrills?

HK93s are more than HK91s. Same idea applies. Get a Vector for a 1/3 the price and go from there? Or shell out the bucks and get the real deal. Depends how many Internet points you are looking to score. There are a lot of MP5-style 9mms for sale, readily now. Prepare to pay $2,000+ for one. The Umarex .22LR guns you see are just licensed. Not true HK weapons. For $300... meh.

Not a lot of help. Take a look at Atlantic Firearms. They have a lot of HK-patterned guns for sale. Good to work with.

Shooter-grade HK91 or MP5 clone pistol (SBR)

It comes down to what cartridge you want to shoot.  Ignoring that, in my experience the most you get for your money in terms of HK clones is from the PTR91 rifles.

ETA:  Don't get a 22lr clone.  That just isn't much fun in my opinion.

MP5, HK94, or clone.  This is the smoothest shooting HK out there.  Cheap to feed on Walmart Winchester White box.

An HK91 or HK93 doesn't even come close.

On pistols, the P7M8 is vintage HK.  Unique, functional, and timeless.

I will have to disagree with the 93. It comes close, but it's an apples-to-oranges comparison, in my opinion. In a market dominated by the AR-pattern, the 93 design is a good platform. I enjoy my Vector 93 clone, and am hoping to replace it with a real HK93 in the coming months.

I do not have a P7M8, but I have a P7 PSP, and it is my favorite pistol to shoot. No frills, no suppressors and bells and whistles- just me and the gun. Even a good PSP trade-in would be a nice way to begin an appreciation for HK designs, and work your way up from there.

If easy and inexpensive are equal in their meaning then a C93 would be the easiest way into HK.
I have a C93 pistol that is a HK53 clone without the stock.  I added a stock and fake suppressor to clone the 53 rifle and it is one of my favorite rifles.  Mine is put together beautifully and runs 100% so I am very happy with it.
If you want a.308 then the price is going to jump up a bit for a PTR and for any 9mm it will jump up alot more.

Solid info thus far but I'd add that when the next shipment of the guns from POF & MKE arrive it will be game on.
I own a MKE 9mm now and the photo of the 33K by MKE (in another thread) makes my heart race!

It's a deep plunge to the bottom of the money pit, but all the best HK's are there. Lol

I also recommend MP5 type.

+1 for the PTR platform.  Advantages include dirt cheap mags and good availability of parts.  Atlantic Firearms is great company to work with and PTR prices are lower now than since 2012.  I've been looking at the C93 clones since they became available but decided against it...  mags are pricey, parts/accessory options are not nearly as available as your options in an AR and build quality can be hit or miss from what I hear (though that may have changed in recent years, it has been a couple since I looked).

First choose which caliber you want to shoot most,  9mm, 5.56mm, or 7.62mm NATO.  If you don't want to invest in another caliber, then the POF5 is the way to go.  Lots of after market parts and armorer support out there for the HK94 based platform.  The POF5 with an arm brace is as close to a real MP-5 without having to get the ATF involved.  I have rifles in all three calibers and prefer the 9mm platform for it's controllability, ease of assemble/disassembly, availability/cost of ammo, and lastly being able to shoot it in pistol ranges instead of rifle ranges.  Once it a blue moon I will take it to the rifle range and shoot silhouette targets at 100 yards, yes 100 yards.  Also I made 100 yard bowling pin shots  with it. Granted the bowling pins just fall down like it was just tipped over and not jump in the air and tumble like the movies, but it is a makeable shot in the kneeling /prone position not all the time of course.   Either way good luck in your decision.

+1. The closest to a real deal MP5 on the market today. PUSH PIN LOWER, threaded 3 lug barrel and built by HK license factory. I have the folding sig brace on mine. Runs flawlessly.
