Or the Israeli HB handguards.................. Were they a light wood colour?

Yes you can.
I have an FNC handguard set on my Imbel FAL. Now FNC handguards are slightly shorter so I shimmed the inside of the handguard ring with leather to tighten up the fit. |

ergos about the same, ditto with heat dissipation. But they do look cool.
Current best forearm I've found is the Vltor, slim and dumps heat well. |
