So I came across this stuff at a local gun shop. It's labeled German 7.62 NATO Training Ammo. It's plastic ammo in a plastic casing with a steel base. The boxes are marked as such:

AM32
50 PATRONE, UEBUNG,
7,62 MMx51, DM18A1B1

(There's a small round logo on this line.. See pix below)
LOS DAG95L0614

This stuff sells for $11.99/box of 50 rounds and it says its effective to 300 meters, though I'd only be shooting to 100. I stuck this in the FAL forum since I'll be shooting this out of my DSArms FAL and there doesn't appear to be a forum specifically dedicated to ammo (other than Reloading, but that didn't seem appropriate), so mods if you want to move this, help yourself.
I bought 100 rounds and figured if it turned out after 2 shots that it was terrible for the gun or just plain junk, I wouldn't mind being out the $24 I spent for the 100 rounds...
I figured this stuff would be great for a cheap round for figuring out the sighting on the gun out to 100 yards. Anyone have any experience with this crap and know if I'm gonna massively screw my gun up by shooting it? I googled around and didn't find much. Is this crap worth shooting for some basic sighting? Is it going to coat the inside of my barrel with molten plastic?

Sorry for the appalling quality. I can take more later tonight with my good camera if someone wants.

I saw it over at cheaper than dirt. They do say it will not cycle an auto loader.

CAMO.

Yeah it says this in the product description if you want it to cycle an automatic weapon: "This ammunition can be fired single shot in any weapon and can be fired fully automatic using PT Breach Blocks or Recoil Amplifier".

I'm mostly interested in whether or not this stuff is gonna gunk up my FAL at all.. I don't think so, but I want to be sure.

Its not going to fire in a semi-auto.

It's going to be a single shot FAL, straight pull.

Yeah I know. That's fine. I'm mostly going to use it for sighting and just getting used to trigger pull and handling the weapon.

Anyone actually shot this stuff yet?

I've shot the german training ammo that was around about 10 years ago.

I don't think its going to be useful for you. Especially if you want to use it to sight the gun in, once you sight the gun on training ammo, the point of impact will be off once you fire real NATO strength ammo.

I'd just save up for real ammo. The only thing that ammo is good for it messing around or hearing the gun go "bang".

Hope that helps.

Bah. Okay fair enough.
I can see it being useful for figuring out the adjustments for sights and for getting used to the trigger pull. For THAT, I think it'll be worth the $0.20/round.

IMO, useless. Just makes noise & will have no relevance to sighting in with real ammo. YMMV

I think Dan's Ammo sells this stuff in a package deal with 1000 rds and a light bolt that will make it cycle  the HK91.  I was curious myself as to how it would do in a FAL, maybe with the gas closed all the way.  I'll monitor here for an AAR.

I got a bunch of that stuff (11,000 rounds)

I took it out today with my old Ishipore Enfield.

Pretty neat.  Loud, but zero recoil.  Some rounds didn't go off due to very light primer strikes, but I consider that a problem with the gun, not the ammo.

Tomorrow my G3 bolt carrier assembly is scheduled to arrive.  I'm going to switch over my sear pack and hopefully be shooting this stuff tomorrow full auto.

Stay tuned for details.

Was out today with a guy trying to shoot this through his G41.  Would not cycle his action.

Nobody expects it to cycle a semi auto in any weapon without serious alterations.....

Nobody -1.

The guy with the G41 sure thought it would - must not have read up ion what he had.  He tore the rifle down three separate times and greased it up until it was just about dripping oil.  Poor dumb bastard!

I bought a box from Wideners (just threw it in the order for S&G) Tried several times to make them fire in the Remington 40X, but the primer was too hard....seems like I tried them in another rifle with the same results, but I don't remember which one it was.
A hammer fired rifle should be able to ignite them, but striker fires may have issues.
