Guy at work has a M1 carbine. He asked me the other day if I'd take a look at it to make sure its safe to shoot. He said the bolt is very sloppy. Being I'm absolutely not familiar with them, I suggested he call one of the local LGS's smiths. I dunno how much its loose or what since I have never seen his rifle. Any info would be great.

On two of mine the bolts are fairly loose, but are tight when in battery.  They shoot fine.  For me, as long as the bolt lug is tight in the charging handle when it's locked forward, I'm good.

If the bolt's sloppy when a round is chambered, that's a problem. Otherwise its part of the design.

Just get a field gauge and see if it closes or not. If it doesn't, it should be safe.
