Just noticed a crack on the heal of the receiver. It's very small and doesn't extend past the lip.

What's my best course of action?

Ugh.  CMP probably has some receivers and they could do the barrel swap.  Fulton does that too.  You can maybe get a barreled receiver from the CMP too.

Since you are a veteran, I think buying from them is easy.  You probably already know that.

You might have to call them to see if they have those parts in stock..... I couldn't find any online.

They don't currently sell stripped receivers or barreled receivers and haven't for a long time.  Stripped receivers are going for $350-$500 on the CMP forums and the OP will have to get someone to install it.

That little C shaped scar on the left side?  Drill it out and weld it..  :)  Not really a critical area right there.

However the repair may cost more than a new receiver...

Who makes the receiver? If its a Sprinfield contact them and send it back.

The Springfield Armory of today is not the same place as the old .gov armory of the past.

I know, did the OP say it was an NFA Springfield?

It's a forged receiver, therefore it is not a cast commercial receiver made SAI.

I believe he did in the other thread.

Just to clarify. It is a Springfield made in 44. I don't think SAI covers those

A few questions.

How long has the crack been there or when did you notice the crack?
Approximately how many rounds have you put through the rifle yourself?

Something has to be going on to cause this in the first place.  Bad op rod spring.  Wrong ammunition. Something else.

I know that people have welded new heels onto m14s and M1s.  I have a friend that shoots a James River rifle with a Winchester heel without issue and the rifle is very accurate..  It may be salvageable but I wouldn't expect a cheap fix.  Maybe take this to the CMP forum, there are some pretty good experts on there.

Missed that, thank you.

The only NFA Springfields would be M14's, that's a Garand he's holding.

I'd drill out the end of the crack and weld it up with a TIG..but that's just me and one other poster.

It's hard to tell from your picture what crack you're referring to. There are some pitting here and there on the rifle but I do not see anything significant. I wouldn't try to "repair it" unless you know for certain the crack was not there when you got the rifle.
