I'm curious.  Is it the same company (the one that built M1 Carbines in WWII)?  Or did someone just buy the trademark and start a new company to capitalize on the name?

Different company.  And they were about as expensive or more so as buying a USGI carbine last I checked. My humble opinion, go USGI.

Reliability issues from what I've seen and heard. Stay USGI if you can.
