I'm sorry I have no pictures up just yet .I continue to read and learn and maybe should have read more before I purchased my first CMP SA M1. Anyway you know, I didn't need it but just wanted the dam thing. Question here and I'm properly throwing myself under the bus. If my barrel is SA F6535448 3/55 should the bolt heat lot be different then what is below? Does it make a difference ? SN# 5844***. I'm going to buy a few more M-1s in the future and want to make sure I get as close as I can to being correct with M-1 collecting and shooting. Before I go shooting this work horse she is scheduled to go to Orion 7 for an evaluation , tune-up, parts replacement (as required) along with test firing and appraisal.

RM1 Service Grade
Muzzle 1+
Throat 2

Thanks

Dude

Your gun is either an arsenal or factory rebuild like most CMP guns. Parts are not supposed to match.

Why would you send it out immediately for work? It should be good to go out of the box. If not, CMP will fix it for you.

I know it was a lend lease. Your right about sending it out.

I'm assuming your visit to Tony's is in town.   Not a horrible thing to give it a once over.   You can buy some spare parts while you're in there.   He used to sell a spare kit with some springs, extractor, et.cet.

Well I'm new to the M1 so just thought that would be the way to go. The more info I get from you guys the better I'm understanding and have been reading much on the M1 and the Lend Lease program. I have a Greek return with a walnut stock and is at least 80% correct other then that I don't know much. One thing I do know is  I don't want to get Garand Thumb. That looks dam nasty

If I knew had to load pictures I would. I keep getting an error that the picture is to large.

Congratulations!

Don't take or send it to anyone.  CMP is good to go, and your rifle will be excellent.  Lube it, shoot it, and pet it.  A lot.  Get the Garand book if you want to learn some more, and take your time getting to know it.

This rifle has been around the block and will be capable of running better than you can manage it for a long, long time, so enjoy it.

Nice, and welcome to club!   M1-itis is about as bad as EBR disease.  It's really hard to have "just one."

Like others have said, buying a rifle from the CMP means they've already given I the "once over" and made sure it is in good working condition, has a properly head spaced bolt, and has no defects that would make it unsafe.  If you were to find something wrong with it, the CMP is known for fixing those rifles.

Not taking anything away from Orion, but no real need to send what is essentially a good to go rifle in for immediate refurbishment.

I'm tired of all my black guns and wanted to start in a new direction so hence the M1. I am absolutely hooked on the history of the M1 and especially driven by the enthusiasm of others as well.

Thanks

Yeah, I agree. If it's indeed a CMP-assembled M1, it should be range-ready after you properly lube it. At best, it might need a new op rod spring, and Orion 7 is the place to go for those. Install the spring and go shoot it.

Obtain a solid 200- or 300-yd zero, and you've got the best battle rifle the Free World ever saw ... Even today, a good M1 would still make a credible home defense or SHTF-weapon to protect you and yours if you've got nothing else.  Stock up on USGI en bloc clips and stockpile a goodly amount of "Garand-safe" ball ammo, or set up to reload for it, and you're GTG.

I even have Opolongo Outfitters' "modern" M1 battle-belt clip pouches to comfortably carry the loaded 8-rd clips (Veteran-owned company, by the way, and Jerry the Vet is a super-nice guy ). A well-sharpened USGI bayonet from CMP rides in its sheath on the belt as well.

Winchester SG M1 with UF&H bayo.

Fyi,

Something too keep in mind.

Not saying this place will do this,  but...

I have heard of places servicing garands, swapping the more desirable parts for the plentiful parts.  For example a ihc bullet guide for a sa bullet guide or claiming a rare op rod was bent or worn out and swapping it for a dime a dozen op rod.

Especially on people who don't know better.

Just something you watch out for.  I got scammed as a m1 newb a few years back. It happens.

Yes, damn indeed.  Forget taking home 3.    Not that I wouldn't like to, but I wouldn't be able to afford it.    Guess I'll keep piecing them together...bit by bit.

They are really nice as well.  After shooting and M1 you forget how much recoil the 30-06 has.  The A3 with a steel but plate can hit pretty hard!   The 2 groove barrels shoot really well too, and my 150gr M1 loads really work well in it.  I'm hoping the 168gr SMK's shoot well in it.

Take it out and shoot it.
