I ordered a field grade special for $830 from the CMP. They ran out and offered the service grade special for $200 more. I took it. It's my first Garand.

Am I stupid?? I don't care about collectibility. I want a shooter. I should get it early next week.

Good choice since you are more interested in a shooter than a collector.

We will, of course, need to see pics.

My service special seemed like a new rifle.  Fantastic metal, new wood.
Anything you get is going to a mix-master rifle.  There really isn't (in my opinion) collector value unless you get an original, unmolested rifle, and that is impossible/super expensive.
You will LOVE the special.

Great choice and will be a better shooter than the Field grade.  Keep all your paperwork if you ever sell some people will want the papers to prove it was from the CMP.

I would take the SG special, but the slight/moderate pitting on the receiver will not make it shoot worse.  The receiver pitting is the only difference in the two.

Good upgrade, but man the prices went crazy. Wish I would have bought more a few years ago.

Not for the Special Service Grade (refurbished, reparkerized, new Criterion barrel and new stock) as their price has been $999 for years.  My son and I have a Correct Grade, like new condition HRA M1 that's in too fine a condition to shoot so he bought a Special Service Grade Springfield model some years ago for $999 from CMP to use.  In a word, it's fantastic!  Much more accurate than a standard M1 and works perfectly as his daily shooter.  Absolutely, a better buy than the Field Grade at $830 and you'll be glad you got it.

What does arfcom recommend, Tung Oil or BLO?

Sand the sharp edges and anything that doesn't blend well then I use BLO. Have seen some good looking tung oil finishes as well. Great rifle!

I'm going to shoot it tomorrow. I got 360 rounds of Greek hxp loaded into clips. I don't know if I'll be able to sleep.

Any other sources of surplus ammo besides the CMP?

I used BLO on mine.

looks awesome.
I have been trying to find a CMP club in my area. There were none.
So I started the paperwork and have 20+ people in my area who are signing up.
I am looking to head to the Alabama store and hand pick one, that is if they get more in (hopefully the Phillipines batch will come through)

I have always wanted a Garand (CMP one more specific).

BLO here as well, only ammo I have bought is from the cmp.

The rest I load.

So . . . how did it shoot?  How do you like it?

Shoots great. I put 160 trouble free rounds downrange. 6 clicks up and 3 left got me centered at 100 yards. I really love that ping after 8 shots.

No one mentions it but mine was delivered (via FedX) to my front door (no transfer through a FFL given the age of the receiver).  The driver asked what I was smiling/laughing at:  me - I just took the box inside and very slowly opened it (with just about shaking hands).  One of the best buys ever!

I think you misunderstand why it can be delivered to your door interstate.

CMP is authorized to sell directly to you as part of their charter.

Otherwise, an FFL would be required unless the receiver was pre-1898, which no M1s are.

Well I got my confirmation tracking number today and its the FG as ordered , no upgrade was offered but that's ok. CMP does a great job and I'm happy to support them.

I'll post some pictures when I get a chance .
