I picked up a M1 couple weeks ago for very good price but I knew I would need to rebarrel the rifle.  I test fired the rifle with 3 different ammo and I'm getting 8"-12" group for 8 rounds from 50 yards (I can shoot 2" groups from 50 yards with my iron sight AR).
I'm looking for a place to get the rifle rebarreled and any suggestion would be appreciated.  This is a shooter and not a collector piece so I don't need an original 70 y/o barrel for it.

I've heard nothing but good things about Bruce Dow, DOW ARMS ROOM, 19250 US Highway 301, Dade City, FL 33523-6816

Go local.  I'd also check their reputation for being able to do work in a reasonable time frame.  Some shops are horrible in that regard.

Orion 7 rebarreled mine many years ago.  Another of those on the first ones to get ahold of.

Shuffs is tops in workmanship, price and turn around time. If I dont do my own work it goes to Shuffs

This. Turn around was a week and it came back at perfect headspace. At the time it cost $80 shipped.

If the OP can find a local 'smith with established "street cred" in doing competent M1 work, that will save him on shipping, and possibly, turn-around time.

If not, both Shuff's Pakerizing (in Michigan) and the CMP can do just about any M1 work needed, including re-barreling to a Criterion barrel   - either in the original '06 chambering or converting it to 7.62/.308.

I mounted and head spaced my own rifle, so I can't offer any guidance in regard to which gunsmith or shop to choose. I can state that I have been most pleased with my Criterion barrel.

Agree. I've been very happy with my two M1s that have Criterion tubes.

Since the OP stated he wants his M1 to be a "shooter," a Criterion barrel in either 30.06 or 7.62/.308 would be the default choice.
