Don't hold your breath.

A lot of what the CMP charitably labels as  "FG"  M1s now would've been rated as for-shit rackers back even 5 years ago.

That said, I bought a S.A. FG at the NS a few months ago. TE gauged 3, with a ME of like, 4 or 5. Predictably, it shot like crap.

Not a problem.  I'm having it turned into a .308 Mini-G by Shuff. Always wanted one of those.

As with everything YMMV. I bought 12 FGs in one shot earlier this year. The worst one had MW/TE of 3/3.

Hard to say.   Someone posted in the CMP forum that they called and were told that they would be only be accepting orders postmarked on the 28th or earlier. You may be put on backorder, or possibly get an e-mail saying they are sold out and to reorder next time they are up.

Let us know what happens.

I just mailed in my order this afternoon, didn't check the stock status today before leaving. Will they automatically mail me a garand next time they come in stock as long as any info I sent has not expired?

SURPRISE!!!! Got a Shipment Notification email from the CMP tonight saying the order I placed on 11/22/2016 has been shipped. (Which that date does not make any sense, cause I know it was the 29th before I even mailed my order in, & the OOS date was the 28th.) It is supposed to be here Monday (2/27/17) after shipping this Friday.

I thought I missed out on these Service Grade M1 from the CMP, so I bought one out of the EE shortly after thinking I missed out. I guess I'll have 2 now.

ETA: Being a first time buyer from the CMP, will the package come with signature required or will they (FedEX) just drop it off on the step? The tracking says it will be delivered by 10:30 am that day, when I am at work.

Great news. One more IA member with one in the collection. I really want to get 10 or so of us together for a m1 shoot. Two clips each rifle, each shooter. All GI ammo. best 100 yard group wins.

Everyone shooting every rifle, using the same ammo takes away every variable possible. Problem is getting that many people together on a range at the same time gets crowded.

I've heard of it happening. Have also heard of them being left on the porch at the wrong address. Not common, but it's happened.

If FedEx did that on a CMP rifle shipment, it was a major screw up.  If there is a Kinkos (FedEx Office) nearby, you can have it held there.

Not at all. I was just hoping I wasn't gonna have to play tag with them cause of their chosen timeframe (before 10:30 am). I mean come on, most people are at work at that time. Why not after 5 pm or something?

Because they have a lot of customers and you can't make everybody happy?  I have the same problem, so I just have it held at a FedEx office store in the area and get it on the way home.  I have one coming next week, probably Tuesday, and will have it held for me so I can pick it up when I get a chance.

I would without doubt.  I received a SG on Tuesday.  It had a nice USGI stock, low barrel readings, and a nice 60's era silver park.

Yeah went for it. I was hoping for at least one wartime Springfield (hence ordering two) with the idea of it being for my unborn son when he is grown up (wife is due in August). We recently found out that my late grandfather fought in the Philippines in WW2 and was awarded two bronze stars. We (my grandmother included) never knew he went overseas at all. It was up to me to carry on the family name, and my idea is a rifle pass on down the line along with it. I have other garands, but none early enough production to plausibly have been in use at the time of my grandfather's service.  If I end up with postwar Springfields again I'm gonna kick myself, field grades seem slightly more likely to be early SNs. Then again, a better condition rifle seems like a good thing for a future heirloom.

I have 2 Service Grades I purchased from the CMP that will stay with me until I die and they're both in awesome condition. One is a December 1944 SA that was in the last batch that never left the US Army's possession I bought back in the early 2000s IIRC as the Danish returns and their VAR barrels were the new hotness. The other I picked up a couple years ago, it's an IHC with an IHC bolt and it's also in awesome condition. The WWII is a safe queen, the IHC is for shooting.

That's a nice thought and it would be an awesome legacy item to pass to your children, grandchildren, etc., along with your Grandfather's story.

Unfortunately, many times interesting or unusual experiences of our parents/grand-parents are never recorded or shared, or are simply lost over time, and on down the line these important personal histories become forgotten because no one who knew anything bothered to pass them on.

A tangible item related in time, like an M1 with a WW2 receiver, would help connect your kids and, eventually, your grand-kids with your Grandfather's war experiences and distinguished service.

Good luck.

The CMP came through for me, again. I'm convinced I am the luckiest buyer they have - I've never received a bad rifle from them, much less one I was disappointed with.

My last Service Grade for the year was a late Springfield, 5.9 Million range, with all late parts except for the -19 bolt. The Springfield stock has late features and appears original to the rifle.

The original barrel was especially welcomed, as 1956 dated barrels are hard to come by, and the muzzle wear is just over "1" on my gauge.

I'm a happy camper.

rumors are circulating on the CMP board and other places they are trying to get about 84k returned from the Philippines; though reportedly in poor condition. Supposedly Orest commented a few years back that if they got the Philippine garands back he expected at least 1/3rd to be 'junk'. That being said, there could be a lot of Specials made if that return comes through.

Regardless of the possibility of future Philippine imports, that last comment you made is really the direction the CMP is headed in   -  less of the "all U.S.G.I. parts" M1s with G.I. wood, like FGs or SGs, and more "Specials" built off still serviceable receivers (but likely pitted up), using some number of commercial parts, the main ones being a Criterion barrel and new wood from Dupage or Boyd's.

Look to see more runs of CMP Specials offered in the .7.62/.308 chambering as well. The HRA Special in .308 I bought some years ago at the NS is actually an awesome shooter. It convinced me that Criterion knows how to make a high-quality barrel. It's a handsome M1 too, stocked in well-grained Dupage wood.

Absolutely, but I can do you one better ...

Last summer, an older gentleman was selling off his rifle collection, which included what appeared to be an "all-correct" Korean War-era S.A. M1 in well-grained USGI wood, with a USGI sling. Said he was the only owner and had never shot it (it looked like it from the color tone of the old grease and lack of any wear on the Parkerizing), and he had long since lost the paperwork.

We haggled down from $1,500 to $1K, and walking out the door I was pretty sure I stole it.

Afterward I paid CMP $25 to do a serial # trace and it came back as having been bought in 1981 from the old DCM. All the numbered/lettered parts checked out as consistent with being original to the rifle, and the receiver's serial number dated to the month the Korean War armistice was signed.

My working theory is that it got built for shipment to Korean but was never shipped or issued because the fighting stopped. It got crated up and stored somewhere until the DCM had it up for sale, and this lucky old gent came along and bought it.

Deals and steals on M1s are out there, guys.
