A coworker inherited a gun collection. She has a garand for sale, of which I admittedly know little more than the basics.

Was supposedly appraised for $1500 by a local shop. Same shop provided muzzle erosion at 2 and throat st 4, and offered her $1500.

She is willing to sell it to me for $900. As far as I can tell, it's a SA produced receiver made in 1944. It has a stock from the 50s along with an oprod from 1950. There is light surface rust on it and it's sat for years. Action seems smooth.

Please look over the picks and tell me what else to look for, or if it's a good buy.

buy it, see what else she has. if you don't want it for $900 pass it along to a fellow board member...........

Not a $1500 Garand. It would be considered a service grade Garand which you can get from the CMP for $730.
$900 would be at the upper end of the market price.
It has been re barreled, it has a national match OP rod which is fairly common and doesn't add any value. Stock looks decent with good cartouche.

If the shop really offered $1500, see if you can talk her down to $800 then take it to the shop and sell it to them for the $1500, then go and order 2 Garands from the CMP for $1460. You can get two Garands for the price of one.

I didn't think a shop would go $1500. Otherwise why would she drop to $900 so quickly?

I'm pretty sure other guys at work searched gunbroker and saw high end garands and told her it was $1500 and up.

She has a colt Python and an old school bullseye 1911 along with some others pieces I don't recognize. Neither interest me much. Trying to get her to go through the ammo to see if she is sitting on cases of 30.06.

I would buy it for 900$. Of course see if she'll take 800$ first tho. Barter her down, and see if she has any ammo for it too. I would buy it before its gone tho.

It really does just look like a service grade Garand. I had to sell off some of my guns and I got between $800 and $975 for my service grades. So $900 is about market value.

I am willing to bet the shop appraised it at more like $850 to $1000 and offered her $500 to $600 for it. Then they would price it at $1500 and sell it for $1200, depending on how long they wanted to sit on it.

At first I was going to say $900 is a fair price, given that CMP mixmaster service grades like this one usually fetch around $900-$1k when they need to be sold, but in my book the rust is a detractor even if it is light surface rust.

Honestly I'd offer her $700, and if she balks I'd turn around and send my packet into the CMP and just get a service grade from them.

Every service grade I have ever received from them is fantastic looking, with several looking like they were hardly used. One HRA SG I have is essentially an unissued firearm.

It's a nice gun. Not fifteen hundred nice. That number is bs. Maybe they said she might get 1500 on a sale on her own but I doubt that. I'm thinking they told her they might be able to sell it for 900 and would give her six.

She probably got 1500 from google searching.

Try and bundle it with the Python for a good price and flip the Python and get the garand free.

Thanks for all the feedback. In waiting on her to check for ammo and anything else. I know there is a lot of reloading stuff (of which I have none) and might try and bundle for that.

If it wasn't the CEOs admin I wouldn't be as cautious. Don't want to be perceived as the guy ripping off the poor lady even though it's no where near $1500 in value She thinks $900 is a steal. While it looks nice, I don't know when it's been shot last or if it even functions. Trying to find a gunsmith to check it out

I'll see if I can get more photos of the rest of them.

Having worked at a shop for years I can say there is no way we would ever offer that kind of money to outright buy it from her. I could see $500 easy and maybe up to $800 thinking they could double the money later.

FYI I just inspected 6 recent service grade CMP guns ( 730.00 each) and none were as nice as that M1. The above mentioned H & R guns (Greek) are gone and you can't can't even order a H & R specifically. I think for a private sale I would buy that gun.

This is absolutely a $1500 M1 Rifle -- stuff is worth what someone will pay for it and there's already a $1500 offer.

What you or I would pay has nothing do to with it.

Buy it for $900. Sell it to the gun store. You're under no obligation to keep it.

Well there is no ammo or clips to be found. She has a bunch of stuff but no time to go through it. The man passed 17 years ago, rifle has sat since then. I told her I'd go $800 based on CMP prices and she agreed to it. Should have it next week. I think it's a fair price and I hope it will function well.

Need to source some stripper clips, ammo, and do some reading on a full detail strip. I hope some of the rust can be removed without damaging the finish. Thanks to all for the help.

Drop some oil on 0000 steel wool and the rust will come right off; finish will be fine. It's tough to hurt parkerizing.

$800 is about the right price. And you'll need en bloc clips, not stripper clips.

You can get everything you need from CMP. Ammo, enblocs, and sling, you might want to get Bruce Canfield's new Garand book. A wealth of M1 knowledge in one place.

They still have spam cans of ammo, already loaded in enblocs and bandoleers.

A little update. Bought the rifle for $800. Seems to be in decent shape but bore was pretty dirty. I'm waiting on some heavier duty bore cleaner to arrive and then I'll take another stab at it. Stock was dry so I have tung oil ordered as well.

CMP isn't too far from me, I was thinking of having them perform a technical inspection on it for me prior to firing it. I need to get ammo at some point so I figured it wouldn't be a bad idea. Has anyone else done this?

Honestly a tilt test of the oprod to see if it's bent, check headspacing, replace the oprod spring with one from Orion and go shoot it with some M2 ball ammo. Don't shoot commercial stuff through it unless it's designed for the M1

I guess it's too long since I fondled my M-1. I don't remember my Springfield bolt having a dash between the S and A. That looks weird to me. Otherwise I think it looks great. But I wouldn't pay 1500 for it.

Good buy, OP.

CMP is a great source for Garand stuff. Make sure you meet all the requirements before driving out there if you're not already a member.

Easiest way is a CHL and to join the Garand Collectors Association.
