Would the Shell 33MS grease be ok to use on the Garand?  I've got plenty of it, as I use it when putting AR barrels on.  Or is there a better grease to use for M1?

I am not familiar with that grease but any good quality grease is fine for the Garand. People overthink it way to much

there  is really no shortage of grease pots for Garands.https://www.buymilsurp.com/grease-pots-us-gi-qty-2-p-932.html

no problems using the surplus grease, and the container fits in the stock like it should.

except that those little grease pots are expensive considering a tube of auto grease will cost a few $$ and last a lifetime and is overkill for a semi auto Garand

look around at gun shows, I've found them for as little as .25

I just use the same white lithium grease I have for AR-15 barrel nuts, I doubt soldiers in WWII cared about which grease they put on theirs

Hell I use bearing grease on mine without issues

I've been using marine grade bearing grease on mine (M1 Garand and M1A) for several years.  The marine grade is supposed to be a little more resistant to the effects of water (rainstorm, water crossing, etc.) than standard grease.

As stated above, a small tube from Walmart lasts forever.

I've used Lubriplate and RIG (which is just sulphonated petroleum jelly) but, as stated, most any grease will work.

I use Lubriplate that I got from Brownell's. A tub will last me a lifetime and then some. But like others have pointed out, about any grease will do the trick.

You have a rifle that has used piss as a deicing and lubrication. Your shell grease will be fine.

I use 33MS for my M1. We have a bunch of it at work for lubing landing gear. It works great.

You could probably use chicken fat to grease your m1.  But some fat guy at the range might start licking your rifle.  There's probably salt in the fat that would aid corrosion too.
