I don't know much about either one, but they seem to have a pretty big following.  In a shtf situation is anyone really going to grab an sks over an ak or the m1 over an ar?  Are they just more of a classic gun to shoot?  What am I missing?

100 yards and out I'd take my M1 over my AR. I know the AR is still probably the "better" weapon, but I'd feel more comfortable with the larger caliber. Not to mention the M1/M14 iron sights are among the best ever designed. It's also the most fun rifle I have shot (unless you want to count full autos... then it would be the numbers matching MP40 )

The mighty M1 Garand killed the enemies of freedom in almost every corner of the world. It gave our troops a superior edge and was only outclassed by the birth of the assault rifle.

As much as I value my collection of this fine rifle, it is not my first pick for defensive use. The AR15 gets the nod, but if only armed with a Garand...it would give good service.

Whenever I go to the US, I ask "Do you own an M1 Garand?"

I ask the question because that way I can find out who is a follower of Obungo.  Every real American should own a Garand

The M1 is a great gun , lots of fun to shoot but it is also history .

The SKS is also a fun gun to shoot . Not so long ago the gun was a screaming deal and the ammo was also . Not so much any more .

Lots of guns of all types out there and lots of reasons to pick one over another . As M1s and SKSs get more expensive some of those reasons
will change around for some folks.

If some silly person were to ban importation of foreign ammo the SKS would not be much fun at all .

I own a AR and a SKS. In a SHTF situation, I would grab the SKS first. I like bigger holes.

As much as I enjoy my AR's, the M1 has a completely different mojo to it.  The M1 has soul.  When you hold it, you know it's been there, done that.   As fluffy the cat says, every American should have one

The SKS is (was) cheap fun...

Get both!

My M1 Garands could have killed Fascist Italians, National Socialist Germans, Imperial Japanese, or Communist Chinese and North Koreans. Talk about world spanning career.

My Ex DDR Soviet SKS Carbine could have been used to on the Berlin Wall for all I know. Talk about a piece of history.

Both are great rifles and fun to shoot. You're missing out. The Garand with an adjustable gas plug makes it 110% more awesome and the SKS is a no frills work horse of a rifle.

You live in a relatively free state but us in New York now have the garand as the only issue service rifle semi auto we can own due to the internal sub ten round mag capacity. Having one around in case your state or god forbid the Feds go full retard and pass legislation like they did in New York it gives you a semi auto battle rifle option - I feel pretty confident in my garand

One other thing the M1 offers over the other guns you mentioned in a SHTF scenario...ensure you have plenty of black tipped AP ammo.  It's expensive, yes.  But will punch thru metal and steel like the other two can only dream of.

I'd recommend shooting one before making that choice

The M1 goes without saying. Pure soul and a great gun.
The SKS is extremely underrated, and lot easier to own and shoot than the Garand, IMO. Cheaper ammo, doesn't require clips, cheaper to buy, lighter recoil, just as accurate under 100 yards or so, still effective out to 300.
The M1 is a "better" rifle in a vacuum, but when it comes time to shoot all day, I'd rather have the SKS.

I don't care much for the SKS, but the M1 is another animal. Have you ever shot one before? Or heck, at least played with one and made the "ping?"

Find somebody that has one and go put some rounds down range. You will quickly realize why people love them so much. The irons are the best in the world IMHO, and the recoil impulse is butter smooth to where it doesn't bother you after shooting 100 rounds, but you still know you're shooting a full powered load. It's the same concept as shooting a 6" .357 revolver. It may not be the most practical handgun, and it may not be the cheapest, but you better believe it's a heck of a lot of fun to shoot. There's something satisfying about sending some heavy lead down range through an American rifle that may have actually done it before in a theater of combat.

This isn't GD. Either contribute something to the thread or take your immaturity elsewhere.

Yep, the M1's offer something that is just not possible with anything else...they not only been there and done that, but they did it with our boys to preserve our freedom.

I currently have 3 M1's.  All WW2 Springfield Armory (all from the CMP) - 2/42, 1/44, and 4/45.  All have their original WW2 barrels.  That last one came out too late to see any service in WW2, but it would have been on the front lines at Korea...and that 2/42...many collectors would look down their noses at it.  It has an ME (Muzzle Erosion) of 4 which isn't good - and the original finish (what is left of it) throughout the gun is now almost a silver.  It still talks when it roars and "pings"..but if it could really talk, the stories it could tell....That is what I like about the M1 that no other rifle can match up too.  The M1 is the last American Battle Rifle that will ever be sold to the American Public at large.  It is the only rifle that changed the course of the free world and that George S. Patton once said is the greatest battle implement ever devised.

Garands are awesome.  Fun to shoot, neat to just hold and play with (the great feeling of an old, wooden stocked rifle).

They are not for SHTF.  I would much rather use an AR15, and if long range a concern I'd use my .308 LaRue OBR or .308 SCAR with optics.  The iron sights on the Garand are really good, but they are still iron sights.  If I found myself in a SHTF scenario and only had my Garand I wouldn't be overly concerned.  Don't buy it for a SHTF rifle, buy it as an awesome rifle and awesome piece of history.

I bought one for my stepson on his 18th birthday, as posted above, every American male should own a Garand.

Are you missing out by not having a M1 in your collection?

In my opinion, yes. It's one hell of a fine rifle. Yeah, the times HAVE passed it by, but not everything has to be practical.

The SKS? That's up to you. I'm a fan of C&R military semi-autos, so I think one is a good addition to any collection.

Maybe it's because I read every book I could check out from the library about WWII as a kid, but to me the M1 has a special feel.

It feels like victory.

It feels like you have in your arms the instrument of righteous vengence.

Every American should own an M1.
