LarryG,
I'm a noob M1A/M14 fan so forgive the ignorance....

But what is an M14S? Is it a Semi auto M14?
Also, 2nd Garand from the left/top of the photo is absolutely gorgeous.....love the color of the wood!

M14S is a Polytech/Norinco M14 clone made in.............gasp.................China with a forged reciever and chrome lined barrel. Some had soft bolts and I finally had mine replaced on an approximately 15-20 year old M14S. It is on its way back from Warbirds right now.

Other companies make M14 clones and call them various things, most revolving around the "M14" name.

Springfield Armory Inc makes an M14 clone and the model name is M1A.

For some reason, some people like to refer to all M14 clones as "M1A" and I have even seen people call an actual M14 an "M1A type rifle".

Call your rifle what it is. If it's an M1A, call it so, if it's an M14S, call it that.

If it's one of the other brands, call it what it is rollmarked.

If it's a real M14, call the rest of us jealous.
If it's a Colt, it's a copy of an original ArmaLite.

I've actually held a real BM59.... couldnt afford it, so I put it back...

Thanks for the heads up.....I agree with you on the nomenclature and the confusion that is spread about by people using common names.

Do you have any close up pictures of the gorgeous M1 Garand?

No close ups and actually, that turned out by chance. The stock was nasty as hell and that's how it came out when I cleaned it up.

I own mine because I always wanted one. I have two LRB M25s now.

Ive owned 2, first the standard which I considered lighter than an AR10 with better sights for better accuracy. Then I slowly put a scope on it and enjoyed it more. So then I bought a National match, did a few upgrades, added the newest scope mount, and a nice Kahles scope, shooting 3/4 inch groups all day at 100 with FGMM. My reloads shoot slightly better in it, theyre just copys of FGMM though. I just like it way better than an AR platform, less parts, more beefy, can beat it up pretty bad withouth any issues. Never ever had a malfunction either.

Better irons that which model of the AR10?

Lighter?

Less parts?

I have an M14S and I love it, but those statements are out there.

I also have 6 AR10s.

It's my duty as a gun loving American citizen to own one.

It doesn't hurt that it's what my dad knows and loves from his time in the service.

It's got to be the best looking military rifle ever made and it just feels so solid and I enjoy shooting it wayyy more than everything else I own. Here is a pic of my standard M1A when it was new. Just perfect.. All it needs is mags and ammo and a target and I'm happy as can be.

I went through basic training in 1967 with an M14 and have loved it ever since. Something about it grabs me. Besides, with two M1 Garands, two M1 Carbines, a 20" AR rifle and 16" AR middy carbine, and a Springfield Mil-Spec 1911, a M1A was just a logical choice.

Since it came from Springfield with the NM front sight:

I decided to add the rear NM aperture:

It shoots like a dream and even out at 200yds I can still hit a bowling pin when I'm on my game. Something about an M14; I've always been really good with it. I was the Company Champion and second in the Brigade in Basic even though it was the first time I'd ever shot with a peep sight before. We went out as far as 600yds (back then it wasn't meters yet) and I was deadly with it . . . still am too just not out at 600 anymore.

I've always loved the looks of the M14, its just a beast. As I got more into guns I decided it was time to get one and started saving and researching. My younger brother who I taught to shoot, enlisted and became a DM in his unit due to his skills. Of all guns he was issued a M14, and we talked about it incessantly. He loved that rifle but really didnt shoot it a whole lot at that point due to getting it riht before deplloyment and I guess the scope and everything else was already packed. I have some neat pics of him holding it when they were laying out their gear to pack and another on patrol with it.

Unfortunately he didn't make it back from patrol one day. His rifle was in the humvee he was supposed to be in, he took his M4 when he was moved. It's kinda cool "his" rifle is out there still.

After that I finally decided it was time to get an M14/M1A and picked up a Springfield loaded. Love this rifle and make me think of talking via email and facebook with him about his M14.

I wanted one to fill a niche in my collection of military & target arms. I replicated (as close as legally possible), one I had seen at Little Creek in the 90's. I don't know how the new ones shoot, but the "old" ones, with a little attention seem to be okay, which is why I've kept it.

20 round group on a breezy day, average to center .327 MOA @ 100 yrds

I have found that when on the firing line in competition, that it is much easier for me to set new windage or elevation changes on my Match M14SA than AR rifles, not saying their better sights, but I like 'em a lot better!

Great post. Would you mind if I could clarify something? Did the rifle not make it back, or your brother? If it was your brother that didn't make it back, I'm very sorry to hear this. And if he did, and just his rifle is still out there, tell him thanks for his service. I bet it was fun talking about the M14 with him.

No kidding, although slightly impractical, I would like one if the had a more reasonable price. Last one I saw was north of 20k.

I'll make do with the pair of M1A's I have been shooting for years.

I carried a M14 and an M21 system when I was in the Army. I liked it way better than the M16 A1 or A2 for that matter. I never looked back. and have owned a M1A since 1980. They are plenty accurate for me.

Ronin, thank you too for carrying that rifle around in the service of your country.
