THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I have about 1/16 inch fore and aft slop in my M1 Handguard. (This is the one which covers the barrel and op rod just to the rear of the gas tube.) What do you recommend to cure this problem? My thinking is a couple of pieces of heavy aluminum tape cut to the shape of the wood that fits into the ferrule to act as a shim. (I'm talking about that heavy aluminum tape that they use on ducts not Duck Tape)

Absolutely nothing unusual with some fore/aft movement in a non-match conditioned M1s front handguard. Run a few clips through it and see if there's still movement after the barrel and gas system have expanded a bit from the heat.

It's not only normal, it's necessary.
BOTH the front and rear M1 hand guards need some slight fore and aft movement.
This is to provide room for the barrel to expand under the heat of firing. If the guards are tight, the expansion will cause the barrel to warp off zero and the guards to crack.

Only a Match conditioned M1 should have no movement in the front guard, and that's because it's bonded to the band and adjusted so it can't touch the gas cylinder. The rear guard still needs slight movement.

Thanks to all. Glad I asked before I messed with it!
