My week-old SOCOM 16 at the range today. It's actually six years old(08/2008) but new to me, and it's an interesting gun to shoot.

When I bought my M1A, it was equipped like the M14A1 automatic rifle variant. After lugging it to the range a couple of times, I lightened it by removing the USGI compensator, bipod, and fore grip.

Best fit, feel, and handling of any rifle I ever fired!

Same SOCOM, different stock, this time it's in a W-W 'Big Red' birch stock I found at the gun show yesterday. It was filthy and dinged up, but a lot of the grime and dents came out as I worked on it yesterday. It's definitely a pudgy stock, and it gives the SOCOM a chunky, solid feel.

For some reason the socom just looks sooooo right in a wood stock.   Not sure why.  Nice rifle.

You'll have fun!  How did you attach the bipod to the stock?  Just curious.  I have one of those bipods and I'm not sure what to do with it.  It's a tall one like that.

Ooops, I just looked at it again and realize that's a normal ole 6-9, eh?  I have this one that's like that tall at it's lowest point.  I think it's also a Harris.  I got it for real cheap one time somewhere, but now I know why.  LOL

What kind of ammo you planning on using for "long range"?  Is that a loaded?

For the bipod I put the sadlak rail on the stock first.  it is a loaded, and as to the ammo....I am just not sure yet.  gotta try some basic stuff first and work into it.

Sweeeeet.  What optic is that.  Can't wait to see it done.  I'm confused about how that rear sight is going to attach.  But I'm assuming it means you're going to have a rail that goes all the way from the rear sight to the front.

Nice collection sailorman2.

Great b&w damageinc.

Cool cheek riser phatmax.  I've never seen that kind.  Who makes that?

Aimpoint Comp M4

Your assumption is correct, it's called the LSP, and it will be shipping this month.

Will do.
I have had this rifle in several stocks, what before configuration are you interested in?

WEIGHT:

5 lbs. 12.2 oz. : 16.25” barreled action, Blackfeather op rod guide, DC Vortex, Trigger group with over sized mag release, and trigger shoe.

1 lb. 15.8 oz. : “RS” stock w/ wear plate, End plate, and two push button swivel bases.

15.6 oz : CTR butt stock, MTD recoil pad, 6 position extension tube, and castle nut.

3.2 oz. : Pistol grip with Blackfeather “RS” pistol grip screw.

Math in my head tells me that's roughly 8 pounds without the rail and sights.

Thanks for that break down!  Mainly thinking compared to a standard USGI stock.  Perhaps both wood and fiberglass.

At roughly 8 lbs that really isn't too bad considering all the added stuff you can mount vs. a bone stock USGI M1a.

Yup. A W-W marked "Big Red" I found at the gun show last weekend for $20. I was worried it wouldn't shoot as well as in the fiberglass stock, because the fit in the birch stock isn't as tight. Shooting at the 25 yard zero targets has the impacts right in top of each other, from either stock.

Very nice.  I didn't want to say anything when you first showed the pics of the mock up with the rds and buis, but I was thinking they might be a tad high.  Is that why you went with the scope?  It looks like a really cool set up as is now.  Of course I'm always defending an optic on the carry handle of an AR......

But anyways... yeah, looking forward to a range report!

I appreciate the kind words, thank you.

I may get the chance to slip off to the range, and settle in behind this one today.

JJREA, it took a couple attempts to dial myself in with the optics on this rail.
Everything lines up perfectly now. The scope stays on the EBR, the BUIS are
available, and I'll shoot with the Aimpoint Comp M4 99% of the time.
