Even the shortened versions during and after the war are still pretty darn long.  It is cool to see how bayonet doctrine even in WWI and before WWII was similar to the 1800's....affixing bayonets was a very real combat tactic, and of course if your bayonet was longer than the other guys, you had a better chance of sticking him first.

Many countries on both sides of WWII entered the war with very much "sword" style bayonets, but many shortened them to be a little more practical for close quarters mele vs. organized bayonet charges.

1943 Springfield.  Almost all correct except for the stock.  It has a GAW instead of an EMcF.  Barrel is the original '43 barrel, cut oprod, correct heat code on the bolt, etc.   Took this today at my Grandfather's grave.  While he didn't pay the ultimate sacrifice during the war, he proudly served his country like so many have done over the years.  I thought it was a fitting tribute to him to shoot my M1 rifle today at his old farm, and pay a visit to his grave.

CMP 5.62mil HRA Service Grade, doesn't looks like it was ever fired. Bright shiny chamber on a 5-55 HRA barrel.

Nice rifle with some real world wear and tear.  Stock looks a little dry though...might be good to hand rub some tung oil on her.

Does the red dot co-witness?  Judging by the rail height it sure seems like it would be darn close to a lower 1/3 if not absolute.

Looks like I failed by having a post on the top of the page with out a picture...will work on correcting that soon.  :)

ETA:  Picture for the top of the thread.  a '43 Springfield M1, next to a Springfield M1a  NM I picked up last year.  Not sure about the date of mfg on the M1a, as I've not done as much research into it as I have my Garands.

I love it!

It's lighter than the UltiMAK I once used, and does the same job.
It also gives the ability to add mini side rails.

My progression thus far:

I received it like this:

And then painted the stock:

And then spent a little bit of money on an EBR:

And then sold the EBR/scope after not having a long enough range to justify the chassis, which left me with this:

Annnnnd after several months of casual shopping and waiting, I finally found a decent deal on a birch stock, so here she is now. There's something about the wood that just feels "right" to me.

My November 1942 (1.05Mil) M1.  $150 receiver, $35 stock, $25 op rod, $15 rear sight, and $10 barrel. I'll never stumble onto deals like that again.

My best benched 100 yard 8-shot group with it. First two were low, and it settled right in after a few clicks north. LC62 match ammo.

Cram as many USGI and NM parts I can into it, custom match grade barrels. I might scope one since my eyes aren't what they used to be but it's not a done deal yet. Might just get prescription shooting glasses instead.

I haven't yet decided what I want to do with the stocks other than I want a brown one and a lighter colored, golden/maple one. Repark the action and barrel and other metal bits.

It's all I've got so far.

Sounds like a good plan!  I'm sure you've already checked out the CMP forum as a good source of parts...
