We are building our new home in a rural area with relatively few neighbors. My Fiance' doesn't do handguns well at all. So, I'm looking for a defense carbine for her to use at home. I've had many AR's and a mini 14 and while they are great guns, they wind up sitting in the safe because of the caliber. I want something that can be used to hunt as well as protect the house. So, I'm considering a MINI 30 tactical. As for optics for hunting I'm thinking a quality 1 x 4 x 24mm optic.

How's the practical accuracy of the new 30 ?

Is it easily a 150 yard Deer rifle ? ( 2 min groups with American SP ammo )

I know this is slightly off topic,  but what about a 7.62x39 or 300 BLK upper instead?

I don't want an AR

I set up and sighted in my dad's new mini 30 tactical, and it is a 3moa rifle with wolf steel cased HP ammo as demonstrated by the 40 or so rounds I shot on paper at 100 yards. I shot prone off of bags, with a 2-7 Nikon scope. I would be comfortable using it for deer at 150 yards. Reliability was good, having no failures of any kind in that limited number of shots.

I had one and don't think very highly of them.

Why don't you want an AR?

Absolutly.  A paper plate at 200 yards is easy with the mediocre iron sights.

Does Ruger still produce a Mini or Ranch in 6.8spc?  I'd consider that a better hunting round with a better selection of bullet choices available.

I prefer the 7.62x39 because of availability

From what I've heard they're better but still hit and miss. If you can I'd try to test out one before I bought it.

That's been considered but it's 4 to 500 dollars more money

I sold my Mini-30 Tactical during the last panic.  I enjoyed shooting it, but it was never better than about 95% reliable with steel case ammo.  It did great with Yugo M67 and domestic stuff.  The factory iron sights are not great and would shoot loose, requiring some loctite.  Magazines were expensive, but very solidly built and fed reliably.  Accepts a scope easily, too, if that's your thing.

But at the end of the day, it didn't do anything I can't do with an Arsenal SLR107.
