Needs to be visible with the firearm assembled. Most people use the magwell but you are not limited to just that.

I'd cross post this in the NFA forum.
I put mine on the right side of the mag well. Not sure what the requirements are, however. |

Around the trigger pins on the right side, which is usually opposite the mfr markings 3. Around the trigger hole 4. Front of magwell ...and some have chosen to engrave on the inside of the magwell lip. |

I have mine marked in the trigger well. The engraving was done by Tarheel State Firearms, I recommend them wholeheartedly.

I had Tarheel do mine also, great work, I just did mine above the fire control pins since I'm not worried about hiding it for anything.If you had something that you wanted to keep the markings central like a Colt M4, then hiding them in the trigger guard is a good idea.
You can also engrave the upper, but then if you got other uppers you'd need to engrave them all. And caliber markings are usually on the barrel, which may or may not be visible. You can place them on the upper/lower/barrel, I just put mine on the lower just because. Not like my CMMG will be anything other than a 9mm anyway. :) |

On all of the lowers I've sent to them, it has been one week from the C'ville P.O. back to my mailbox. They do great work, and are great to deal with. Hope this helps, Bob S. |
