About to send out my 15-22 barrel to have it chopped, but haven't decided what length to go with. What length does everyone suggest going with? It will wear a SilencerCo Spectre all the time.
Thanks |

Consensus has been 4.5 inches in order to keep bulk packs subsonic.

I have a 6.5" CMMG barrel on my 22 SBR, it keeps 99% of bulk pack rounds supersonic. I would go with the 4.5" barrel recommendation if your goal is to make bulk pack subsonic.

I plan to cut the rail so the suppressor sticks out about an inch or so. I don't want to cut more than I have to. View Quote I have a CMMG 4.5" barrel under a 7" KMR and a Dead Air Mask. That arrangement does exactly this and is silly lightweight. On top of that I put a PDW stock (because why shouldn't a stock be half of the value of the whole gun?) and OAL is now 21.5". No buffer and spring adds to the lightness. |

I'm torn ...
On one hand I would like to keep bulk packs subsonic, but on the other hand I like to shoot without my can from time to time and don't want my bare muzzle under the hand guard. |

How do you install or remove the barrel without being able to clamp the barrel to tighten the barrel nut? View Quote I think people make much too big of a deal about that (especially on the S&W forums). I agree you should clamp the barrel on the initial removal since you have no idea how tight the factory installed it. After that, I just snug it up. Never had an issue. |

I have a fake suppressor the same dimensions as my Spectre that I can use to shoot unsuppressed. How much did one of those run you? I wouldn't mind having the option to shoot without the suppressor sometimes. That's why I am still torn between going 4.5 vs around 10" so I can throw a flash hider on there and go. |

Just go to eBay and search for "muzzle brake blank". I see some 6" ones listed now. I ended up just contacting one of the sellers and asking them to make what I wanted. There are also several existing fake cans that you could buy. The problem is most of the rimfire size ones I found are 5" long (similar to Sparrow instead of Spectre) |

4.25" will get CCI Standard velocity rounds to go subsonic.
That's the ticket. |

Would there be any noticeable difference in velocity from 6.5" to 4.5"? View Quote IIRC it would drop something like 100 FPS to keep it subsonic. Sorry, I chronographed the 6.5" years ago but don't recall the numbers. Every now and again I will get a Federal Bulk pack round to go subsonic, when it does it is noticeably quieter. |

Ok, I have decided to go 4.5, and run a fake suppressor when I take my Spectre off to run it on the .22 pistol. Now, what did you guys do for engraving?

View Quote I just took a Dremel to the front of the magwell. It ain't pretty, but it's legal...and was free. ETA: THSF has laser engraved quite a few polymer firearms and they look great |

I did the Dremel engraver thing as well. Taped the trust name on the receiver and traced the letters. Not too bad but can tell it was hand done. Gives something for the kids to look at when I'm gone and it is passed to them.

What are you guys doing with these things? How far are they accurate out to?
|
|
Not to be sarcastic but shooting it. Quiet and my daughter can handle it better due to the weight and adjustable stock.

Just finished my 4.5" CMMG build last night, it's stupid lighweight: 5lbs with empty mag, 4.7lbs with no mag, 4.2lbs without mag and suppressor. Surprisingly it's a couple inches shorter than my 10/22 SBR with same length barrel.

I copied BigWaylon (thank you sir ) and went with 4.5 and cut the factory rail. I didn't have a band saw but my miter saw gave me a perfectly clean cut, no sanding needed (depending on the blade you use) and someone you know will have one. Plenty of rail to cut, so do a practice cut until you get it right and to make sure your blade you're using has enough teeth to make a clean cut. I cut off a litttttle more than I wanted, so make sure you cut slightly long then screw the suppressor on and evaluate. I would strongly suggest just keeping the poly rail and cutting it, this is paper light this way http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt216/taymag/SampW%2015-22%20SBR%20w%20Silencer_zpswbaaya80.jpg View Quote I hated the factory cheese grater hand guard and picking a different modern slim style hand guard will not increase the weight. Also, I have the benefit of easily removing the hand guard with two screws should I need to get to my suppressor. Without the magazine: 4.5 lbs with everything on the gun, sling, optic, suppressor, and buis. |
