So what do I need to do if I want to bring my SBR across state lines? (up to wisconsin)

What form do I need to fill out?
Does it have to be approved and they mail me back an approved form?
How long do they normally take?

A family friend wants to go shooting on 12/4 up in wisconsin. I'd like to bring my sbr but I dont know much about crossing state lines with it.

Yes, you need an approved Form 5320.20.

You will need an actual address where you and the SBR will be, like your bud's or a range. You will also need the name of the county in which the address is located.

You mail in TWO copies, they mail back one if "they" approve.

I don't have a lot of experience filing 5320.20's but in January it took about a month to receive the approval for the last 5320.20 I sent in.

I'm curious how long they might be taking now since I sent one in a couple of weeks ago for a hog hunt in January.

BTW, if you google "Form 5320.20" NFA Lawyers or another NFA specialist form has the form on line in a "fill out, save and print" format which beats scribbling with a pen. Also, you need to have that approved form with you when you travel to your bud's. Good idea to bring SBR stamp and any suppressor stamps too.

I got mine back in three weeks about two months ago. I think if you fax it in and ask nicely they may expedite it for you.

Took about a month for my forms to return back in August.  From a recommendation online I filed my forms for a one year time frame. I'll drop another couple of forms next year before these run out.  One form for suppressors, one form for SBR.  Copies printed and laminated for the gun bag,  originals in the safe.

If the SBR started as a pistol and you put it back to pistol form, ie; blade/brace configuration, would that be ok to cross state lines legally?

This whole process is stupid. I guess you guys doing forms for a year go back to the same place a lot with your NFA items?

In my case yes.  I live 5 miles from the PA state line, and a gun club/range I belong to is in PA.

Same here -- I live within 1mi of the state line, gun club is a few miles south also on the state line, but on the other side.

But if I did want to go anywhere else in the state, I could, provided I perform the interstate transport to the specified location first (my interpretation, which is a little more conservative than some). My further travel within the state isn't federally regulated.

Fwiw, it took about a month to get the older of two recent 5320.20s I mailed in back in the mail approved. Came Wednesday. I would check the actual date I signed, but I'm out of town deer hunting till Monday and the approved form is back home.

I think the whole "need approval for travel" issue stupid too, and hope it goes away, but with a little forethought it isn't nearly the hassle the new 41FU procedures are.

I have forms approved for states I've never taken an SBR to. I just pick a range in the state and submit the form, whether I'm going to that location or not. I'm just needing the permission to cross the state line.

They'll take any one year period. For example, 1/1/17-12/31/17 or 11/28/16-11/27/17. Just can't be over a year, so you can't put the same date the next year.

When I first started, I filed from the current date to 12/31...then started a cycle of filing each fall for the next year. Just easier for me to remember. Just as an example, here's a recently approved form for 2017. The pic is from the 41F thread/sticky I did:

They will also take an "INDEF" in the return date column. I'm AD military and move a lot. They've approved them every time with an accompanied letter.

My dad lives in MI and I shoot with him a couple times every summer.  I filed the form in July and it took exactly two weeks door to door.

First I've ever heard of that, but definitely good to know. I'd assume without the letter it would get kicked back.

I'm interested in this.

My brother and I have a cabin in CO;  he's on my trust, and I'd like to leave some things out there from time to time.
If using "INDEF", can I move them back and forth at will?

Likely will need the letter explaining the INDEF time frame.  I am betting it is an exemption due to military duties.

An annual year long filing would do. Just send in a 5320.20 every year with a one year period given.

I just opened some mail and found my most recent 5320.20. I signed it 11-1 and they stamped it 11-20.
