I'm finally in a position to buy my first SBR upper.  I have two stamped stripped lowers ready to go, plan is to get a 14.5 in one of the M4 configurations and another in a MK18 config.  I was not planning either to be a pure clone.  I've also kicked around build vs. buy, but for the past few years I've pretty much settled on a DD MK18 factory upper.  But in the course of my recent research for 14.5 M4 configs I came across the Colt 10.3 and 11.5 uppers..stupid me.

My plan is to suppress whatever 10.3/11.5 upper I get with likely a Surefire SOCOM.  I'm aware of the over gassing on the DDMK18 commercial barrels, but beyond that what would other pro's/con's be for one of the 3 uppers?

ETA:  Price is a consideration, but not the sole determination.  I see AIM has the DDMK18 right now for $999.99 and G&R has the Colt's at $895/LE6943CK 11.5 and LE6945CK 10.3

LMT 10.5?

there is another thread attesting to a bunch of happy campers using that config.

I'm one of them

They are relatively affordable too.  Somewhere in the $500 range for upper

My DD MK18 has been fantastic.

No issues what so ever and it's shot a lot of different ammo.

Not sure I could recommend it more highly.

Yup, LMT produces winners for sure.

LMT for the win. DD knows what it is doing, but LMT has been in the space much, much longer.

I have a 6920 cut to 10.3 from ADCO. Runs flawless, suppressed or not, runs every type of ammo. I use a Surefire Mini.

I don't think the Colt uppers are actually in stock at G&R Tactical. Add the items to the cart to see if they are available. Tried buying some parts there a while back and most Colt stuff is out of stock when you put it in cart.

This, NOTHING in stock. EVERYTIME I look they never have anything in stock. Don't even look anymore.

On another note--I really like my Sig 516 SBR for running my suppressors on. Runs longer and cleaner than my Colts do(all factory stock rifles).

Thanks, but if I go the DD MK18 route I think I'll spend the extra $20.00 and support AIM (but also pay OH tax).

I did check the G&R site and tried to add the Colt uppers to the cart and get the out of stock message.  Sucks.

Thanks for the heads up on the LMT MK18, I'm going to check those out.  Looks like its DD MK18 vs. LMT for now as I'd like to at least get a MK18 style 10.3/11/5 upper ordered soon and then look for a M4 14.5 style upper.

I haven't owned the DD because I am just turned off by the gas port and the laser engraving but I 'm sure they are fine rifles.  I have owned LMT 10.5s (both MRP and standard... still have one of the standard ones) and I own a Colt 6933.  I have liked the Colt better than the LMT.  They honestly run about the same but the colt is a little more accurate IME.  The main thing that I have noticed is that the Colt runs on full auto with a wider range of buffer weights than the LMT.  Not really an "issue" but it was an interesting observation.  I would get an 11.5" over a 10.3" without hesitation... the length difference is minimal and you lose a pretty decent of velocity in that 1" .... 11.5 is kinda in a spot after which you start getting less return per inch so that is why i like it... kinda balances the compactness with velocity well for me (I don't shoot past 400m with a 556 AR... ever).  The 11.5 won't look as sexy with the suppressor (I run an SDN6 most of the time and the extra inch of barrel does make it feel longer... its like a pinned 14.5 vs 16) but I promise you the 11.5" will be a better rifle when it comes to functionality/performance.

I think the DD Mk18 upper would be pretty sweet. I think the huge gas port is a big issue though, so I would be tempted to build that one rather than buy. I bet you can build it for a lot cheaper, too.

For the 14.5" upper, it's not an "M4" setup, but BCM's 14.5" middys are waaay too nice to overlook. The ELW barrel and 13" handguard are incredibly light. With a TA33G-H, you have perfection:

You should buy what makes you happy.
I personally wouldnt pay dd's price for a known overgassed gun to be suppressed.

If i were building a 10.5 to be supressed id talk to micro moa.

I own a lmt 10.5 and two fn/psa 10.5 s all run flawless

Love hearing this and reminds me that my original SBR plans have been for years to get a DD MK18 upper, put a T-1 on it, some BUIS and then get moving on a suppressor.  Pretty much the same for a 14.5" M4 carbine.  Get both of those inhouse and then start to expand my builds/uppers.  The Colt's have pretty much everything done and ready to go with the included BUIS and rail, esp in the case of the 14.5" upper vs. going BCM and still having to add a rail.  No biggie.

Sounds a lot like mine. Thinking about a possible FDE color change.....but it's doing just fine as it is...we'll see.

The lower isn't a DD, its a Knights full ambi lower. The SF light usually rides along as well. Damn near perfect gun IMO.

Another happy DD mk18 user here. It is over gassed suppressed but not overly so. Most AR's are going to be over gassed without a adjustable gas block, however with that said DD is a tiny bit over gassed versus some other barrels. I plan to do a adjustable block on mine someday but even being slightly overgassed suppressed its not really tearing my brass or moving parts up all that more than unsuppressed.

I have a commercial DD bbl that I used for a build. It's definitely over gassed. I put a springco blue spring and H2 buffer and it tamed it a little bit. I wanted to use a MicroMOA Govnah adjustable gas block for the build with the Geissele rail but there is not enough clearance for the regulator plate to fully move. Might file down the plate a little and rebuild the upper in that configuration. Right now it's built as a mk18. I haven't shot it suppressed yet to comment on the overgassed issue while suppressed, but it's noticeable unsuppressed.

Prior to putting RIS II on

Didn't get to shoot it w/ the can yet

Definitely want to build an 11.5" upper w/ that rail. I don't know of any other rails that are that magical 10 3/4" length.

Good news, MK18 upper arrived today from Primary Arms.  Looks great.  I want to finalize the remaining parts I need to get to complete this build and take advantage of some Black Friday (racist? lol) sales.  Any suggestions/recommendations you can provide would be appreciated:

Lower Parts Kit:  I have a RRA single stage in stock that I purchased last year, but not looking to purchase a Geissele right now due to costs.  I've read some good things about the ALG (Geissele lite?) and I was thinking of picking up one of their LPK's with the ACT trigger.

Stock: I have other AR's with B5 SOPMOD and STR.  I need to pull them out and pick one.  Leaning SOPMOD.

BUIS:  I have a Troy rear BUIS available in my parts box, still need a front sight.  Or go with a matching set.  I have Troy's on other AR's, but I'm open to suggestions.

Receiver Ext/spring/buffer:  Looking for 6 position mil-spec for B5 SOPMOD.  I see some posts about other MK18 owners using H2 buffers, is that needed or regular carbine ok?

Optic:  Plan on using the T-1 with included mount for now.  Also have a M4s I could move.  Open to other suggestions (long term).

Muzzle device:  Stock A2 will do for now, but I expect significant blast/flash.  Planning to use a Surefire Warcomp eventually, esp as the mount for a SF SOCOM2 suppressor

Suppressor: SF SOCOM2, checking out local and online dealers.

Grip:  I've used Hogue on other AR's, but open to something different.

On the ALG/Geissele front, they're having an awesome Black Friday sale on rails and triggers. Go with the SOPMOD for sure, because clone. Troy sights are really nice, too bad Troy as a company isn't high up on my list of favorite people. H2 buffer is probably a good idea, it'll most likely be overgassed without one. For the T1, spring for the LaRue LT-660. It's worth it in every way. The stock A2 flash hider isn't bad on a 10.5". I personally can't stand the Hogue grip, I switched to all Magpul MOE + grips that have a really nice rubberized texture without the weird shape of the Hogue.

On the suppressor front, if you're set on using that suppressor...wait a little and check around. They just came out with significantly lower pricing. Make sure you buy at the new price.

Thanks GP, just the advice I was looking for.  I already have the T-1, found it at last years NRA convention at the Eurooptics booth, great price.  Your thoughts on the Hogue grip are kinda how mine have changed, I like the texture, but not the shape as much anymore.

I like nothing usually or a stubby foregrip, but tried out an afg after having surgery on my hand which caused some wrist issues and it makes it more comfortable. I usually end up wrapping a finger in front of the end of the afg though to get a better grip.

I got a surefire mini scout from arms unlimited for 185. Had to wait like 3 weeks or so before it shipped. They're kind of a hassle to deal with but they have had good deals like that mini scout.

I used the Black Friday sales to pick up a lot of parts/items for both my MK18 and M4 Block 1/1.5 build.

Sights: Troy M4 black front and back.
Stock:  I waited too long, all of the SOPMOD's were gone.  So I went with a STR which saved some money and I'm happy with it.  I wasn't looking for pure clone right now and I can always change.
Sling:  Held of on sling to see how the base rifle feels when done.  But I did get a receiver ext base plate with QD socket.   And two QD swivels.
Muzzle device:  Somehow I missed the Surefire 50% offer and could not find Warcomps anywhere else I purchased from to save on shipping and/or overall discounts.  I'll wait and get one with the suppressor and/or another sale.  So I picked up a regular S2 for the M4 for now.
LPK/grip:  I went with the ALG ACT trigger and lower parts kit for both.  I'm going to use an existing Hogue grip I have and seek out other options for now until I can touch/feel something else.
Rec. Ext/Buffer: I went with the BCM kit and a standard carbine buffer for both.  I've had mixed feedback from other MK18 owners about standard carbine vs. H2 so I'll experiment, esp later with suppressor.
Suppressor:  Going to order a SOCOM RC2 5.56 soon.
Light:  I need to get a light as I'm planning on this and the M4 to become a bedroom/SHTF weapon.  Leaning SF, but wide open to suggestions on models/makes.
Foregrip:  I'll experiment with a couple of KAC VFG I have, I'd like to try the Magpul AFG's and see how they feel, they seem very popular.
