The Nikon scope has the most horrible reticle ever. I've got one in the closet that I won't even sell because I don't want to be partly responsible for someone else's bad choice and subsequent headaches. THey put a thick NATO cross in the center that serves no purpose and really messes up the sight picture. Good glass, and the 2-7X seemed like a nice range. I was also successful at calibrating the reticle to a few loads but it took a while. The biggest thing, is I will never again buy a scope without covered or otherwise locking turrets. I found myself off by a full revolution after pulling the rifle out of my bag or letting it hang against my side in the field more than once.
I ended up with one of the Hilux/Leatherwood CMR4-AK762 units and it matches up REALLY closely, and has great glass and tons of information in the reticle. It looks busy at first but it wasn't bad at all and actually made ranging stuff really fast and intuitive. Also, MIL/MIL with locking/covered turrets, and I was sold. The one potential issue is it is set up for meters, so for initial zeroing I had to zero at 200yards for a 217 yard (200M) zero and verify at 100 yards for a 108 (100M) zero. But now that's done all the ranging is internally consistent and the math is actually easier (for me, at least) in meters. Careful shopping as the older version of these float around for <$350 but the newer (better) version is in the $420-450 range.
The only reason I didn't go with the SWFA 1-4 classic was the exposed turrets, and if I were step up I really like the SWFA SS 1-4 and 1-6 offerings.
Honestly if I weren't using it for hunting I would just throw a T-1 on there and call it a day.
