Hello,
I am waiting for my eform to come back and am trying to figure out my which 300 blackout upper to buy for unsuppresed shooting MN won't have suppressors for a while (hopefully I'm wrong). I am debating between a 7.5 to 10.5 inch. I have 8.5 inches on my eform. I'm pretty sure this has been asked but would appreciate some guidance.
Thanks

8.5 is about perfect. I started with a 10.3, it got shorter.

The 8"-10" 300's seem most popular.

I have a 8" and like it quite a bit.

What weight buffer goes with an 8.5?

I use an H buffer on my 8.2" and it will cycle subsonic reliably without a suppressor.

H for semi-auto and H2 for full auto, but not many run 300 in full auto...

I went 10.5 in case I ever decide to hunt with it using supersonic rounds.   You also start to limit your handguard choices once you go shorter.  I would use my SDN-6 and due to the latch, I cannot run the can under the handguards.

The round is designed around a full powder burn in ~9", which is why you see so many people using 8"-10" barrels.

I chose 10.5 to maximize performance with supers

This, You can always reload and tune a load for your barrel length.  I went with a 10.2 Noveske.

My wallet cringed after I read this

If I can take a 240lb hog with one shot at 100yds with my 8" I see no reason to burden yourself with 2 more inches of barrel for "hunting" or "supersonic use".

I went with the 9" AAC barrel, fits perfectly under the 8" KAC URX rail. I figured they know what they are doing. After all, they designed the round. However I'm surprised I don't see any other companies making 9" barrels.

If you intend on hunting with a SBR 300BLK, here's my experience:

The bullet I use (Nosler 125gr BT) requires 1800fps for optimal expansion, per Nosler.  With my 16" Blackout, that works out to approximately 200yd.  With my 9.5" and 10.3" Blackouts that works out to 150yd.  With my 8" Blackout that works out to 100yd.  I chronographed all my bbls and plugged the velocities into a ballistics program and came up with those distances for the bullet that I use and mounted optics appropriate for the distances.  Different bullets could give differing max effective ranges.  Now, if you will not be hunting, I don't think the bbl length matters as much.  11 deer, 4 hogs, and 2 coyotes taken tell me my approach is working fine.

Thats whh for SBRs the SST is a better choice. In my testing it exoands well down to 1600 or so which for my load in my 8" is 175yds give or take. Ive shot a few hogs hogs at 150 with great expansion but none at 175+ yet. My water jug testing closely mimics my results on game as long as the bullet doesnt plow through a bunch of bone.
