I am just getting interested in the SBR.  I sort of like the AK versions.

However, just wondering out loud; why is a SBR a Class 3 item?  What is the big deal here?

Seriously.  You can get a short bbl "pistol" but throw a stock on it and it is Class 3.

Sometimes I really hate the Feds.

Boneheads and Commies that they are.

The firearms are title 2, not class 3. Any firearm covered by the NFA is a Title 2 firearm; title 1 firearms are regular handguns, rifles with 16+ inch barrels, etc. which are not restricted by the National Firearms Act. Class 3 is the type of license required by an FFL to handle and deal in Title 2 firearms

Why it happened:

The Teetotalers had their panties in a bunch when the Feds repealed the 18th Amendment (Prohibition). Along came the St. Valentine's Day massacre and they galvanized around that to pressure the Feds into outlawing another "evil" of society. The Feds caved, but excluded "conventional" firearms so as not to excessively piss off the other 80% of the country.

Does it make sense?  No.  Work within the current law, work to change the current law and move on.
